Not piling on. I honestly don't know his music much, but have friends who are big fans. By your comment, I'm guessing you're the vocalist . At any rate, I'm not comparing your timbre to that of Tom Waits's; more the phrasing & some of the aesthetic.

But seriously, does this mean you don't like him? Thought you might at least approve of his rebellious "sensibility."

 

14% of food stamps go to able bodied working age adult families with no children in the household. About half of all recipients are families with children, 1/4 are caring for elderly and most of the rest have disabled members leaving that 14%. Those 14% remaining include drug addicts and those with mental health issues.

Now, studies show 98.5% of food stamps are fraud and abuse free.

Knowing all that, are you really upset with the fringe issues around food stamps? Why the hell are we giving tax breaks to companies that are not poor, elderly, nor disabled? They are rich and wealthy. Focus some ire there.

You have the audacity to call someone stupid when in fact you are wrong. Farm subsidies were to help farmers and to maintain a robust food supply.

Farm price supports maintain a minimum price and can increase the price. Much of the excess due to higher prices is exported.

 

Yup. I have no doubt that there are societally beneficial policy goals behind farm subsidies. But the same is true for food stamps.

Farm *insurance* in principle/theory benefits the consumer. I’m sure we all must remember some basic history as to how farm insurance was put in place to stabilize food markets after the Great Depression and the dust bowl.

Farm *subsidies* primarily benefit corporate farms, and in many case do nothing for either the small farmer or the consumer. Look at the corn lobby as the most classic example. You think those lobbyists are looking out for the consumer or just looking at the stabilization of markets that insurance brings? Hell no. The fact that particular lobby is so powerful should give you a clue. Hello McFly! It’s $$$.

They are looking for million dollar handouts. Govt paying billions of dollars (in total) to increasingly large operators, so we end up with so much corn we don’t even know what to do with it (end up using it as refined sweeteners or even fuel when the benefits of doing so are questionable at best). Almost every product is sweetened with corn. Literally subsidizing diabetes and cancer. Fortunately there is some movement against this, but I continually wonder why we “subsidize” corn at all given the excess of that crop.

 

I’d say the goals of farm supports were commendable but at this point it is just political - buying votes and corporate welfare.

Exactly. It's in Donzo's (and all of our) best interests for poor people to not go hungry. History is rife with examples of what happens when they are not fed.

with Ukraine and Russian farm production down, hopefully we are cutting subsidies and increasing production as food prices prepare to soar. paying people/corporations not to farm jsut to keep the price high to support higher prices for farm land makes no sense
