making the national rounds now. just embarrassingly bad judgement by our guvner to even put these people on a board, let alone listen to them

Scholar who drafted Florida's slavery teaching standards once implicated in alleged kidnapping (msn.com)

William B. Allen, a retired professor with a history of promoting far-right, anti-public school, and anti-LGBTQ causes, previously served as chairman of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission in 1989.

However, writes Legum, "during his time as chairman, Allen was also charged with kidnapping a 14-year-old girl from an indigenous reservation in Arizona. The girl was at the center of a custody battle between her birth mother and a white couple that wanted to adopt her. 'Allen contends that the girl wants to leave the reservation, though the mother has formal custody,' TIME reported in 1989."
    .....................
Another controversial member of the work group is National Black Republican Association chair Francis Presley Rice, who has promoted propaganda falsely claiming Martin Luther King was a Republican, said former President Barack Obama was friends with terrorists, defended the racist GOP "Southern Strategy," and claimed in one of her magazine's articles that Democrats "embrace their child molesters."

Allen and Rice, who were reportedly the two main figures influencing the project, have put out statements defending the curriculum, and listing off a number of purported former slaves who went on to become successful through the skills they learned on plantations. However, as Legum noted, experts have pointed out almost half the people on their list were never enslaved. Other passages of the curriculum falsely claim George Washington, a slaveowner until his dying day, was a "key figure" in abolition, and instructing students that civil disobedience and nonviolent lawbreaking of the type Dr. King and other civil rights figures used is "irresponsible citizenship."

DeSantis has to search pretty deep in the alt-bench to find people who will debase themselves to support such offensive themes.

is his team actively seeking them or are they seeking him and he is letting them in or are they being referred? the whole thing is an embarrassment but happy that he let his true self be shown before he got to a national office

Just going off of my kids AP experience. There were a couple of AP history classes that ended up getting cancelled and he had to pick something else because of low numbers. One of them was a history class that discussed the Vietnam War. Sounded interesting.

There is no AP class that covers that era in depth, never has been. The only AP History classes are US, World, and European. Here is a complete list of AP classes that are available.

Course & Exam Pages – AP Central | College Board

I will say that because some schools were designating courses as AP (even though they weren’t) College Board began a yearly audit process for all courses and instructors to make sure that schools weren’t misusing the designation.

Again, it wasn’t a REAL AP class. I’ve taught AP classes (government and Econ) since 2000.

Interestingly, some schools had a designated AP PE class

Why bring this thread back up? I hadn't read this beauty... the Desantis circle is literally made up of nuts.

DeSantis appointee to Disney board taught seminar using discredited research claiming White people were slaves in America | CNN Politics

An appointee by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to an oversight board of Disney’s special tax district taught a seminar in 2021 falsely claiming “Whites were also slaves in America,” using discredited research to say there was an “Irish slave trade.”

The comments were made by Ron Peri, one of five people DeSantis appointed earlier this year to oversee the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District to replace the old board after the company spoke out against what critics dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law in Florida.

Peri, an Orlando-based pastor and CEO of a Christian ministry group called The Gathering, made the comments in an hourlong class for his group posted on YouTube about critical race theory called “Cunningly Devised Fables.”

In other comments Peri spread false claims that Irish slaves were forcibly bred with enslaved Africans. He also said a “significant” number of free Blacks in the antebellum era owned slaves, claims disputed by reputable historians who say the number was minimal. CNN archived Peri’s comments from 2021, which he deleted from YouTube following his appointment to the Disney oversight board.
