2023 Football Roster - Florida Gators

The Gators have size on both sides of the ball. However, I'm particularly concerned for Desmond Watson. In his time with UF, Watson has gone from 400 to 415 and now to 439. The weights were taken last month and being 6'5" helps, but there is really no excuse for being this large going into year 3. It's not like it's all muscle either. I'm concerned for his heart health with him being such a heavy person. I always thought he'd be around 380 after a couple of years in UF strength and conditioning. Why has this not happened?

Boy is it hot out there too! That is an interesting thought. I guess I would say the same. He should have shed some pounds after being in a program, and not temporarily. He has to work, so it isn’t him sitting on the couch all day (is it?). Body type? Discipline? Diet? Hard to say. Just hope he is safe. T Cody was a massive dude. I dunno.

Agree. There has been too much success from the nutrition program with other athletes to point the blame/reason at them. This is a Dez issue.

If he has aspirations to have an NFL career, he needs to drop weight. The days of massive NT's are gone. The top guys are in the 300-350 range and can play 3 downs throughout the game.

Do not be surprised if he starts losing reps to the younger more athletic DL's that are coming in.

It also appears that all the ILB's have put on weight and now are in the 230-240 range.

Jack Pyburn has also dropped 10 and now is at 253. I still would like to see him as a ILB.

On short yardage, line Big Des up in the backfield and let him move the pile.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he is pushed out after this year if he doesn’t make some serious strides. The competition for roster spots is going to be tough.

I'm not sure Mike Peterson is Adrian Peterson's older brother... that has to be a misprint.

Mike is Adrian's older Brother....although he was a really good player at Alachua Sante Fe HS, UF didn't recruit Adrian. I was disappointed that they didn't, but he went on to a great career at Georgia Southern (my other alma mater) following in the footsteps of another excellent fomer Sante Fe HS alum, QB Tracy Ham.

As a side note what may be confusing is there was another RB who played at OU by the same name and was in the NFL around the same time as Mike's Bro:

Big Des is like a freaking cult hero.

I'm hoping he works through his weight issues. So far, he's really been a contributor; I guess we'll see. He's a load though.

    Go Gators.

Agree. Maybe not the best use of a roster spot to have a guy that gets winded after a few plays and walks off the field.

The coaches don't agree. It's not soccer. You go as hard as you can for 4 seconds, and you play 25 snaps, and let your depth at the position get you to 75 snaps total. He is a force at 400 lbs. But yes, he could be better at a lower weight.

Don't get me wrong; it's obvious Des does contribute to the team, and sometimes in crucial situations. But, I'm just saying he would contribute more if he could stay on the field more. Watch him leave the field after he is rotated out. He lumbers off so slowly he sometimes barely makes it to the sideline before the snap. Uptempo offenses seem like they could be his... kryptonite. ;)
