Interesting point. I have never recorded anything from my car and do not have a dash cam. Is there a phone app that is recommended for situations where a recording is needed? This woman recorded a Florida Trooper but don’t recall if they said what she used.

Voice memo app comes loaded on iPhones. I’m assuming other phones have something equivalent

I agree with parts of this, but the extent of subservience reeks of "thank you sir, may I have another?"

It makes me sad that these folks seem to tacitly acknowledge that the trained professionals with guns and badges are incapable of doing their jobs effectively, so it falls to us to ensure these interactions, which are the worst parts of our days and literally cops' jobs, don't escalate into violence. That's a depressing outlook on the competence of police.

I might do some of that if I had guns in my car but I don't own any. :)

Story I just remembered. Back around 2001, my wife was pulled over by a Gainesville PO. She's Japanese and had only been living in the US for three years so she had little understanding of police encounters in the US. For no known reason, the officer searched her car and claimed to have found a "marijuana seed." Utter, absolute nonsense, disgrace of alie. She only does crack! Okay, the last part is untrue, but it was still nonsense even though he "let her go."

Too many people give too much leeway to police to fish around and find things, real or contrived. Indeed, her situation is so common in the US that people have come to think that it's their duty to comply with unconstitutional demands or they're made to feel afraid through threats and coercion. This doesn't mean be a jerk to police. Your points are valid, and folks would benefit from being unfailingly polite and doing what they can within reason to show they're not a threat. But dang, I'd argue don't give up a millimeter of your rights. Ever.

You don't owe it to police or to society. None of us do.

OT, but an interesting story. I can't tell the whole thing, but allow me a Cliff's notes version.
    Gainesville, St. Patty's, I'm a grad student preparing to party/celebrate w a friend.
Upon leaving celebration-facilitating premises, I wasn't just pulled over, I was head lamped and cutoff buy a GPD, blocking my way from the front. Obviously, in my mind, this was about the celebration-preparation.

I turned off the engine and placed my hands on the wheel. THB I don't remember if my window went all the way down, but not being cognizant of such issues at the time, it probably was? This was nearly 20yrs ago.

So the LEO immediately asks me to exit my car and you can imagine what's going through my mind. I comply and w/o conducting a search, she explains that I nearly match the description of a person who had just committed a robbery of a nearby store. I was able to diffuse the situation pretty quickly by explaining that I'm a doc student in """""", a former elementary school teacher, and a person who does not commit robberies.

At that point, we waited for additional LEOs, one of which pointed their lights at me so the person inside could ID me. The episode lasted at least 45min, involved interactions with several GPD, and ended with me driving off while a canine in the latest arriving vehicle was going nutz at me.

I just happened to be wearing a similar shirt, hair color, and facial hair, as a person who committed robbery nearby. Throughout the episode, the element of celebration prep was in my back pocket . . . but I was never searched. There's a bit more to the story ;), but this is the gist. (for giggles)

    ACLU Mobile Justice.

But the more realistic option is to livestream it on any platform. The Internet will capture it. Just like mass shooters do. Except you’re the shootee.

Bambuser was the OG outer. It would record the interaction and send it to your SM accounts. But they shifted to different interests.

Or in a pinch just call ANYONE and let it roll. Literally whoever will answer. Amazing how that cleans up so much “misunderstanding.”

Most of mine would be actual lawyers, but I might also call my retired mom who is eager to talk all day every day. Doesn’t really matter, just have at least one living witness.

I have a concealed carry permit and keep pistols in my cars. When I'm pulled over, a relatively rare occurrence, both front windows go down and both hands are out the driver's window as the cop is likely aware of my permit status after they run my tag and name. More than half of the TPD and HCSO LEOs will recognize me, so that makes it easier. I immediately tell them I have a firearm in the car and exactly where it is. I don't go near it. I have my registration and proof of insurance in a small vinyl folder in the driver's door pocket ready to be produced immediately.

I realize I'm allowing them far more visual access than I need to, but I don't smoke weed or have anything illegal in the car. It's not an area I chose to make an issue of my constitutional rights.

They've never asked to search and I haven't received so much as a warning, much less a citation. Not bad considering a lot of LEOs perceive defense attorneys to be the "enemy."

Ur not wrong in this assessment, but, end of day, what’s the response of least resistance?

I'm not saying people are wrong to choose full compliance to try and get through the traffic stop as quickly as possible without upsetting the armed government agent who is basically unaccountable for bad behavior. I'm simply saying it's sad that we as a society have let it come to this and aren't demanding better. There are so many effective reforms, but people are too irrationally afraid of crime and change to consider any real reforms to policing in this country.

Don’t see how you get to this was illegal. Could it have been? Maybe. But what you cited certainly does not confirm it was illegal.

Which makes perfect sense if you’re not hiding anything. I never realized it’s not their right to ask you to lower your window all the way down. Just seems like an irrational hill to make a stance. Unless, of course, you’re hiding something. Either way, by not lowering it down, it definitely creates the appearance that you are, indeed, hiding something.

disagree. It’s just common sense. We were on a cruise and during a conversation I said “ thank you ma’am”. My 6yo was asked a question by an adult male and as
He’s been taught he said “ yes sir, thank you sir”. The couple next to us said “you must be southern”. We all know tampa/Clearwater isn’t the south, so of course she was referencing how we addressed others. I didn’t bother to answer her but the real reason is a lifetime of martial arts and learning and teaching others to be respectful. Really not that hard, but by all
Means keep doing and teaching it your way and keep getting the same
Disastrous results. Just don’t expect me Sign on to your latest claim of victimhood after acting like a Jack wagon to someone in law enforcement just to demonstrate your bravado knowledge of the law

nice job on the professionalism. I can promise you the LEO appreciates it and it’s likely why you never had an issue.

You're not supposed to let them know about the guns. You gonna give up the secret libbie handshake next?
