The problem does not have a one dimensional solution. Education is obviously extremely important in pulling people out of poverty. But education by itself is not going to do it. You have to have an equal amount of “moral” education. Finding somebody to teach 2+2 = 4 is not the problem. The problem is teaching students why knowing 2+2 = 4 is the solution.

People arent poor because they are immoral lol, its because they lack money. In this case its children, who are basically dependents. The only cure for poverty is to give people more money, that's it. Everything else is a waste of time, and all the moralizing in the debate is basically a way of arguing for reasons not to give people more money, or only help the "worthy." The libs and conservatives are obsessed with education fixing everything. I'm not going to say education is pointless (its good for its own sake), but people that go to school hungry and go home to an unstable living situation aren't going to perform highly in the best funded schools, private, public or mixed. Funding education through a charity isn't transferring wealth, its basically a way to avoid that (and for rich people to get a tax write off).

when you see a word in “ “ that supposed to be a hint not to take the word literally. To say people are poor because they lack money is just sad. If you think “wealth” is measured by the type of car you drive…then you are poor. Mother Theresa had no money, but if you think she was poor, then you are ignorant.

To the point however, you seem to be suggesting that providing tangible wealth to the downtrodden is the solution. I disagree, and so does history. Remember…..teach a man a fish……

That is literally the definition of poverty! Being rich is having a lot of money. This isnt some spiritual bullshit or about what kind of car you drive, its economics.

Poverty is certainly a common denominator. My then wife worked on an NSF (early 80’s) grant comparing rural and urban poverty and schools. Very similar outcomes. Rural areas have substantially less resources.

    The trends as I remember
Long term poverty, lack of jobs, feeds the system of lacking many life skills. Whether through lack of exposure, unavailability, desire, etc.

Homework tends to be ineffective when the parents at home lack education or the dynamic does not allow for concentration.

Buy in from parents, after school tutoring, summer tutoring programs, etc are all needed to try and raise the bar. Teachers dealing with nonstop behavioral issues will never be able reach substantial gains. Consistent leadership and direction is also needed. If only there was a shat ton of best practices research….. A new leader every year that changes curriculum, etc, will never help.

wasnt there a study a few years ago where they gave money to homeless folks to see what happened. Of course the expected happened without the life skills and education to manage it.

I agree with the majority, if not all of your post...especially the ancedotal part about the homeless getting cash. When you combine the lesson to be learned from that with the "need for the buy in from the parents"...you have stated my position, just in a different way. Money is not the solution to fix the poverty which plagues learning. It has never worked, and it never will. We have to change the culture of educuation. You can't just tell a kid he has to go to school, you have to instill a value system in him/her so he/she wants to go to school.

Make up your mind, is poverty a problem in education or is it not?

https://mangolanguages.com/resources-articles/9-reasons-why-english-is-a-difficult-language-to-learn/#:~:text=Most English language learners will, require a lot of memorization.

English language is hard. I get it. You are confused by two different determiners; “the” and “a”. A determiner is a modifying word that determines the kind of reference a noun or noun group has. “The” is specific and “a” is general.

Poverty is a problem, but not the problem. (As I have said throughout).

If you thought poverty was at least one of the causes, you wouldn't have bolded, underlined, and italicized the "not" in "But…..Poverty is not the problem" and call it the "fallacy" and follow it up with what was in your words the problem: government and in earlier comments, lack of values and lack of male role models.

You're not going to weasel out of conflicting arguments so easily. But thanks for your English language pedantry.

You should look more at their growth instead of raw pass/fail. If the class average started at 1st grade math level and finished at 7th grade math level, that is a win.

I think you know what he is saying. You can’t throw money at poor people and expect them to pull out of poverty without changing parental values at home.

It is not my problem that you can’t read, it is not my job to teach you to read, it is not my place to tell you that you suck at arguing on message boards. Instead, I just provide you the basic facts.

if you don’t like the English language, take it up with Chucky Webster, the author of the English book thingamajigy.

One of your problems, besides being inept at the English language, is your reading skills are deficient as you also lack the ability to put comments in context. You get the context of the position by reading multiple post together. You don’t take one word, or one sentence out of a single post, and think that that’s the end all, be all, of the discussion.

    I posted

Money is not the solution to fix the poverty which plagues learning.

Nah, if you are rich and a screw-up you are just Hunter Biden. Money makes all the difference. Wealth matters, values dont in America.

Yeah, you got all the snarky, condescending responses but when I asked you some simple questions, what did you do? Offer fallacies and attacked my motivation.

My initial comments and questions to you weren't about how to fix the problems or the real or perceived failures of government failures or policies. I didn't bring it up or discuss the merits of those arguments, although I'll acknowledge that you did offer them up, in some instances, as causes.

Problem is that I questioned you about the difference in your argument about poverty being behind crime, but not causing differences in social values, lack of male role models and problems in education You were emphatic in saying that poverty wasn't...and that it was a fallacy.

It is only later on when I pressed did you acknowledge it, but not before you piled on bullshit.

Anyway, I might have been born in the morning but it wasn't yesterday morning.
