SEC football coach rankings: Kirby Smart passes Nick Saban I dont know about this list...CBN has a tall hill to climb this season but he will have a nice season.
How much is A&M paying Jimbo to be ranked #8? Freeze might end up being 6th, but that's too high at this early stage, imo. Spoiler: Napier ranking #11 . . . at least it's not at the bottom
im sure I’ll get blasted, but the talent that Mullen left for Napier was better then what Muschamp left Shane Beamer. You had AR with Billy’s 1st year. We had a guy transfer from a division 2 school, a grad assistant and a WR that all played QB. Yet with solid coaching they got to a bowl game and won. For Shane to take SC to 2 straight bowls with what Muschamp left was a miracle. If he gets 8 or 9 wins this year; then he’s very deserving of being rated highly. You have to remember.. he’s never been a HC and not even a coordinator. For him to accomplish what he has in just 2 years and bringing in some solid talent. I think it speaks to his potential of being a very good HC in this league. Obviously, many will say I’m bias or I don’t know what I’m talking about. But you guys had Muschamp and know the huge gaps in certain positions he left UF. Could everything fall apart this year? Absolutely. Napier could end up being a much better coach than Shane, and UF certainly is easier to recruit at then SC. But I believe as of now, the guy deserves some praise.
It’s a fair take. And Beamer deserves credit. I would just caution the ‘more talent’ statement. You’ve been on this board for awhile and know that the recruiting & roster management under Mullen was a lot of smoke & mirrors. Not to mention he left behind a huge culture problem. Plus Shane is a year ahead of Nape. If we’re being honest it was really how your season ended that has people excited.
1-3 is pretty accurate. After that it was a lot of BS. I don’t get the Kiffin love. He went 1-4 to end the season last year and hasn’t won a game over a quality opponent since being there. And the last time Hugh coached in the conference he got fired for cheating (and was really bad at it) and chasing prostitutes. If you want to point at his Liberty record to justify it then why is CBN’s Louisiana success overlooked. Stoops & Heupel should be ahead of both.
1. Saban 2. Kirby 3. Heupel 4. Kelly 5. Kiffin 6. Napier 7. Stoops 8. Fisher 9. Freeze 10. Beamer 11. Pittman 12. Drinkwitz 13. Lea 14. Arnett
Agree with this ranking pretty much. One thing I would say is that from 6-12 (or maybe 5-12) you can make arguments to re-shuffle them.
Tier 1 Saban Kirby Tier 2 Heupel Kelly Tier 3 Kiffin Napier Stoops Tier 4 Fisher Freeze Beamer Pittman Tier 5 Drinkwitz Lea Arnett
He has to prove it to move up the list. Heupel, Kiffin, Stoops, and Freeze have shown something in the SEC, even if that is just showing marked improvement from the previous guy. Saban, Fisher, Smart have titles. Kelly has been to the CFB playoff and won the west in year 1. Then there's everyone else. If Napier manages 8-9 wins this year and next, then he's in the top 5. If he wins the east, then he's in the top 3. Gotta show something to move up this list.
If Napier wins the west, I don’t think anyone would disagree that he’s deserving of a higher ranking.
Haha, oops. Changed. It’s occurring to me that he has one season to win the east. If he wins the east this year, he’ll probably deserve national coach of the year award and will definitely be one of the best coaches. The tallest of tasks but I still think he’ll be up there after year 4.
