Looking in my car is not his prerogative. Supposedly he stopped me because I didn’t switch lanes. What does one have to do with the other? Besides that, he can see it anyway. It’s glass, not an optical force field or one way mirror. I use that same glass to see outside.

And the window was far enough down to do all transactions.

“Suspicious” is a catchall that means nothing.

We definitely seem to have a mentality of “oh it’s a cop, I must bend the knee or else” in this country that I think other countries just don’t have. Not sure why.

I can definitely say I don't feel that way and yet I agree with some of the sentiments here about traffic stops.

There was a time when I was stopped around 12 or 13 times in less than 3 years. Younger with a buzzcut and sideburns driving beater cars. I was stopped most of the time for total BS like window tint or not having a front tag multiple times in states that required them despite having a Florida tag. I was stopped for "irregular rate of speed" in Salt Lake (to make matters worse i left with the gators blowing out miami and got home as the blew the lead) at the wrong hour of the day. Alabama multiple times for things I can't remember. I got stopped some times for speeding in florida and one other time for tag lights.

In every instance I had my license, insurance and registration in hand because I knew it was coming and figured why irritate them anymore by having to try to find them. I was always compliant even when the stop wasn't legal because I didn't know what type of cop I would get and fighting my case right then and there wasn't going to end well.

Only time I got a ticket was a bs reason from a bs cop but even then I didn't argue it there.

Doesn't mean I'm a boot licker although I do acknowledge the risks of stopping a total unknown at all hours of the day and often times alone. I can't stand many things about policing including some of these "proactive" stops I encountered as well as some of the deficient people wearing the uniform.

Because they will execute you post haste?

Vax was too savvy to take my “why not” bait on the response about not “pissing off” a cop. You don’t piss them off because they have an inordinate amount of power on the spot and protection after the fact. You are indeed at their mercy.

And I get away with a lot because I look and present like I’m also in The Club. Cops ask me if I’m military. Sketchy AF dudes at bars and clubs and 7-Elevens ask me if I’m a cop. When I first started teaching a fellow teacher asked me if I was former FBI, because that’s what some students told her (this is NOVA so FBI is common; my neighbor is Secret Service.) My own IA (co-teacher) one day said “You can tell you’re former military” because I gave the maniacs a lecture on how petty problems are yours (students) to fix, until you don’t and then they become my problems to fix, and I fix problems immediately and permanently in ways that are great for me and bad for you.

Once (a loooong time ago) I was riding with a former HS teammate (he played football at Wake Forest) and he got pulled over in our hometown for a rolling stop at a turn-on-red (and that was true.) The cop was a guy we went to HS with. My boy was outraged by this and was mos def uncooperative. Even I was “Duuuuude…” It escalated until they arrested him. By this point every cop in town was there. So he put his hands behind his back but refused to put them close enough to get the cuffs on. Right around his hips/butt. He’s about 6’1/250 and stupid jacked. They could not move his arms. He just stood holding firm, like 6 guys trying to get these cuffs on. He wasn’t fighting or flailing, literally just frozen and would not allow them to get it done. This went on for about 10 minutes. He would just wait until some other dudes tried, or they tried batons to move his arms. They eventually did get him cuffed, he finally got tired and broke. But they never abused him. Lots of yelling and certainly physical stuff, but nothing that truly threatened his life.

When I got him out the next day, we drove to that police station (the jail is in a different town) and he made a big display apologizing to the cops on sight. Most of them were actually there. It was sincere and the cops were mostly accepting.

That was late 90’s. We talk about that today. Same place, same offense, same resistance. What would happen? Deader than fried chicken, I imagine.

Amusing that you think mentioning he played football at wake forest would impress anyone on a gator board

    Excellent job on the deescalation.

I have worked and trained with all ranges of LE from county, city, state and federal. I train my kids to do exactly as I was trained. If pulled
Over…. Roll down ALL Windows completely, turn off radio, turn on interior light at night, driver places hands on wheel fingers spread. Front passenger same on front dash. Any rear passengers hand on seat in front fingers spread. All phones and tablets down. When I answer question I say yes officer, yes deputy, or as I tell my kids if you don’t know the difference say yes sir and look them in the eye. Really simple stuff. Never had an issue and usually get a ‘thank you sir’ as they walk away. In addition, I regularly carry firearms in my car both rifle and pistol and never had an issue with any LE interactions. Feel free to do as you please and get whatever results work for you. What I said above works for me my family

Did someone on this thread really only roll their window down a few inches when they got pulled over? What is the purpose of that other than to antagonize?

Don't turn phones down, but have them out and hit record.

I've only been pulled over a few times. The last time I was pulled over, before he walked up, I rolled down the window with arm hanging out showing I had nothing in my hand, and my other hand on the wheel. I drove away with a warning.

sure. I understand your reasoning but I’ve always been instructed and tell others, initially keep your hands visible and empty. If you want to hit record go ahead. Just keep hands empty and visible quickly afterwards. If you’re a blonde in a halter and a convertible Mercedes it’s a different scenario than a creepy meth head and neck tattoo in an unmarked van and the LE will act accordingly. The officer may be super annoyed at the milf in the Mercedes but he’s likely not fearing for his safety. Just be smart and don’t act like a Jack wagon

All excellent recs (though I don't roll my windows down all the way). But keeping police at ease is the wise thing to do. Being respectful as well. All can go a long way.

Just don't give up your rights, and use tech that can help protect you against suddenly lost body-cam files :)

most people have tinted windows. By rolling down all windows, you deescalate by letting LE know there are no additional threats in the back. Just something easy to do and brings down the tension a few notches. I have a large SUV with tinted windows. There is a lot of space for a potential threat, by rolling them down I grant visual access. In some cases I have been carrying rifle(s), ammo, and full kit and usually asked about them. I say where I was and what I was doing. Never once had to open one. Again up to others How they handle, just giving information based on years of experience

This might be the first one of these threads where one side isn't screaming for a life sentence for the cop..But then again the alleged Victim is white.

Well he didn’t shoot the kid. And I don’t think he meant to get him killed. So it’s not the same as most of the vids we see of cops shooting and killing black people.

He’s just super dumb and/or poorly trained. Zero awareness. I don’t think he should be charged but absolutely should be fired.

I just think it’s sad that this sort of thing is necessary. That cops feel threatened because they can’t see in a person’s back windows. Perhaps it’s because (like you) so many americans are armed so they constantly have to be on high alert.

    Nothing wrong with that.

Just like rolling factory 5% tints halfway.

Why is the latter so crazy, unless it’s fear of unjust repercussions?

it is really sad. Interestingly my interactions with LE, to best of my recollection, has always been pleasant, polite and respectful. I work Extensively and train others in martial arts. These are same principals we teach and I teach my kids. Armed or unarmed my actions and words are same and I can tell You first hand my LE friends and acquaintances are not even a little worried about me possessing any firearms
