    Warning: somewhat graphic

Do we need to raise admission standards for the police academy or something? What the hell is this idiot thinking tasing someone in the middle of a busy highway? Unless this kid was wanted for murder there is absolutely zero excuse for this.

Sad. A series of unfortunate events.

Does anyone have video of how running from the police has led to a positive outcome?

Chris Rock recognized the folly some 25+ years ago.

Slight thread change - funny how the Right is ridiculed for questioning authority (COVID vaccines, masks, DOJ, etc) and told to shut up and comply but the Left is totally okay with folks disobeying authority (cops) and the blame is put on the authority. Pick your poison folks.

I’m obviously not a “comply or die” guy, but the guy fleeing and running onto a busy highway is the root issue here. That being said, the cop is an idiot and should also be fired. Criminal? I’m a bit more neutral on this one as far as calling it criminal. I think he should be fired because he created a situation that could have caused a major pileup or even other deaths.

For some reason, they did not release the video of the entire stop. There apparently was an interaction just before where this starts.

This part is just educated guessing:
I suspect the driver was stopped for a routine traffic violation and gave a fake name to the cops. The cop was able to determine the name was false and was going to arrest him for obstructing the police, generally a misdemeanor, or he was able to determine the driver had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

In my view incapacitating someone in the middle of a busy highway is using deadly force, which was most likely not authorized here. Taser him in the median and I'm fine with it.

I'd like to know more if there was a warrant. Violent felony or something else?

Stupid kid. He couldn’t have been but 20? What a way to throw away your life. Dumb tazing a fleeing suspect in the middle of the highway but I wouldn’t call it a crime for the cop. Horrifically unfortunate.

Tunnel vision. Kid running is mostly responsible but this is the lack of situational awareness I shake my head at. The highway itself is always the first priority when dealing with anything there. Any firefighter will tell you highway calls are the most "routinely dangerous" calls we run. I'd imagine highway patrol are keenly aware as well or maybe they get complacent. Criminal charges? What would that do? It was a terrible mistake and lapse of judgment but not criminal.

I don’t advocate criminal charges for the cop. It’s just insane to me how unnecessary and stupid his reaction here is.

What a dumb kid. So sad. I feel bad for the cop being put into that situation. He was doing his job. I don't see what he did wrong

Just don’t tase him in the middle of a highway. Again, unless he has a warrant for a violent crime - if he gets away, BIG DEAL! Getting the kid killed is not the solution.

OK, here's the rest of it. The local prosecutor decided last week not to file charges.

The car was stopped for expired tags. The driver gave a fake name. The cop determined the driver's real name and, in addition to the tag violation, the driver's license was suspended and he had violated pretrial release orders on a drug case.

After the driver was hit, the cop handcuffed him and tried to administer first aid.

Driver's family is suing. The DA won't charge the cop, but criticized his lack of judgement.

    Expired tag.
    Fake name.
    No license.
    Violated terms on drug charge.

Yes - I think it’s horrible that he’s dead. His actions over a period of time led him to this fate. Wasted youth.

In Florida the officer's deployment of the Taser would have been illegal.

943.1717 Use of dart-firing stun guns.—
    (1) A decision by a law enforcement officer, correctional officer, or correctional probation officer to use a dart-firing stun gun must involve an arrest or a custodial situation during which the person who is the subject of the arrest or custody escalates resistance to the officer from passive physical resistance to active physical resistance and the person:
    (a) Has the apparent ability to physically threaten the officer or others; or
    (b) Is preparing or attempting to flee or escape.
    (2) The Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission shall establish standards for instructing law enforcement, correctional, and correctional probation officers in the use of dart-firing stun guns. The instructional standards must include the effect that a dart-firing stun gun may have on a person.
    (3) The basic skills course required for certification as a law enforcement officer must include instruction on the use of dart-firing stun guns. The portion of the basic skills course on the use of dart-firing stun guns must be a minimum of 4 hours’ duration.
    (4) A law enforcement officer, correctional officer, or correctional probation officer who has not received the dart-firing stun gun training described in subsection (3) and who is authorized by his or her employing or appointing agency to carry a dart-firing stun gun after the effective date of this act must complete, before issuance and use of a dart-firing stun gun, the 4-hour dart-firing stun gun training described in subsection (3) or an equivalent training course provided by the officer’s employing or appointing agency in accordance with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission standards outlined in subsection (2).
    (5) After completing the basic skills course, each law enforcement, correctional, and correctional probation officer who is authorized by his or her agency to use a dart-firing stun gun must complete an annual training course on the use of dart-firing stun guns. The annual training course on the use of dart-firing stun guns must be a minimum of 1 hour duration.

100% agree. He did not deserve death. And, I’m very aware that I have made stupid decisions that could have led to death or serious injury; so there but for the grace of god go I.

So the police are blameless here in this young man’s death? No choice but to tase the kid in the middle of the highway?

Crazy how some are seemingly incapable of faulting the police.

well, definitely not guilty for driving while black.
But would say the driver is at fault for running and the police officer is at fault for being out of shape
