So, this movie appeals to both feminists and anti-feminists alike? Brilliant strategy. Doctor Barbie came out in 1973! We're here half a century later, and are told nothing has changed. In a way it's correct. Boardrooms, Congress, etc., are still overwhelmingly male, and the little female representation that does exist at the highest levels of power relies on civil rights law and women's tears. Yes, loser men have fallen behind, but this is just a reversion to nature after the artificial male world of the 1950s, and nobody really cares about loser men anyway. By acknowledging sex differences and presenting the patriarchy as permanent and practically indestructible, Barbie presents a feminism without progress or hope. A truly decadent system of thought that offers little consolation to its adherents, which is good news for anyone opposed to what the movie seeks to represent.
I looked up the person who was quoted from that tweet and have no doubt my interpretation of the movie will be much different than his.
At the risk of spoilers, and also oversimplification, I think the message is that we are all trapped by roles and hierarchy and that we are all better off just being who we are. They make the point that the "Barbie world" was structurally unfair to men, followed by a quip that now they are now free to exercise power, and that they currently exercise about the same level of power than women do in the real world
Interesting. Sure I will see at some point and will be open-minded. It seems to have hit a nerve with anti-feminists. I guess I intuitively and without any reflection have thought of "Barbie" as being the antithesis of feminist over the years given what I perceived to be the brand's focus on her looks, conventional (unrealistic) beauty standards, superficiality, and the social expectation that girls are supposed to look like her or even enjoy playing with dolls. I'm sure I'm way off though. I know literally nothing about Barbie except having had a roommate in college who played the aponymous song on repeat when he got drunk.
What I know is from having a daughter. They literally marketed the movie as something you would enjoy if you love Barbie or if you hate Barbie. Think I linked to an earlier thread. And it makes sense once you see it. It's a little preachy at times and I did think they would necessarily land it until right at the very end. But they used an odd device which I will not spoil
I love nerd films, and I love Cillian Murphy. Haven't been this excited since my first concert, the Osmond Brothers, in Miami. We were stationed about 50 miles from Alamogordo for one of husband's tours of duty, so I'm well versed in Trinity lore.
Seeing Oppenheimer Thursday at the local AMC IMAX. There's actually a true 70mm IMAX (1 of 19 in the US) not too far from us, but it's sold out through August 10th when we checked over the weekend.
Hmm.. Lots of testosterone and guys being guys in these 2023 movies... Sisu John Wick Expendibles 2 Mission Impossible Oppenheimer The Meg Gran Turismo Equalizer 3 Napoleon Aquaman You can find a movie for whatever you want to watch or complain about in my opinion.
Yeah, there are legitimate concerns about the lack of good blue collar jobs these days, and that's addressed in the article, too. They also say a lot of men have simply left the workforce and aren't even looking for work. There are many movies that celebrate male characters in various ways, not to mention sports or music. The fact is that many boys and young men have have been struggling educationally and professionally, and that gap seems to be widening. Not sure how much of that can really be pinned on Hollywood. What is notable though is that even those who support more traditional gender roles seem to be conceding that boys and men are emotionally sensitive and need to be supported and respected. We may be making progress with respect to the last part.
Nice work there. Weeded out all the crap, and left a decent list to choose a couple/three maybe four from.
The absolute WORST take on the movie ever. The wealthy are so screwed up to see this in the movie. First thing that came into my mind while watching - what would be Barbie’s estate plan Barbie’s estate plan would also specifically include provisions for charitable contributions and preserving her empowering impact on the world. I as Barbies hypothetical lawyer have taken it upon myself (with her permission of course) to highlight a few pretty details about her estate plan. 1.Dream House: Barbie’s enchanting dream house, the heart of her world, would be carefully safeguarded through a thoughtfully established trust, ensuring its grandeur remains intact for future generations of admirers. 2.Car Collection: As a trendsetter with a passion for automobiles, Barbie’s estate plan would intricately outline how her stylish cars are to be managed, preserving their allure and significance for years to come. 3.Designer Wardrobe: Barbie’s enviable wardrobe, a symbol of her timeless fashion sense, would be lovingly distributed among her loved ones or donated to charitable causes, spreading the magic of her iconic style. 4.Intellectual Property Rights: Protecting her brand’s image and intellectual property would be of utmost importance to Barbie. Her estate plan would encompass measures to ensure her positive message and impact endure, inspiring generations beyond her time. 5.Charitable Contributions: Barbie’s generous spirit would shine through in her estate plan, with designated charitable contributions and trusts supporting the causes closest to her heart, continuing her legacy of empowerment and philanthropy.
