Color me an optimist, but it's only a matter of time until a conglomeration of intellects get hold of this shit, call it for what it is, and force the hand of the disgusting folks who made it happen to correct it. Trump appointed a know-nothing loser to Secretary of Education who ultimately was unable to do the extent of harm feared by many, including myself. I believe that in the end, the education intellectuals will rip this up.

In a way all this nonsense may be a long term blessing. Conservatives at this point really have no limits and filter as to how far they will go. If it gets bad enough eventually voters will start voting the idiots out.

To turn that statement into an argument, they have to first define the vague words “woke lessons.” They actually mean to say, “Lessons about the Tulsa and Rosewood massacres, the horrors of slavery, the injustice of lynchings, murders of civil rights activists, voter suppression, and how those examples of systemic racism still survive to negatively affect Blacks today can make White students feel guilty.”

Now that we have defined “woke lessons” more specifically, to make it an argument, the arguer must not just state that “White students feel guilty” but tell us that doing so is a bad thing. They’d have to add something like “Lessons about the Tulsa and Rosewood massacres, the horrors of slavery, the injustice of lynchings, murders of civil rights activists, voter suppression, and how those examples of systemic racism still survive to negatively affect Blacks today can make White students feel guilty which has a devastating effect on their self-worth.”

That is an argument, which the Florida Board of Education would know if they actually understood how basic essay writing works. You need a clear thesis. The next step, of course, would be to offer evidence that supports the argument. They’d have to prove (1) that a significant number of White students experienced guilt and (2) this guilt caused significant damage to those students. (I know “significant” is also vague, but this is an article, not a doctoral thesis.)

I couldn’t find any polls or studies that determined how many White students complained of guilt. There is only anecdotal evidence (the worst form of evidence) of parents saying their child felt guilt (or shame). That raises three problems: the number of students complaining so far is small, we can’t be sure they actually felt guilt (because we only have the parents’ word), and that the level of guilt they did feel, if any, caused any damage. For example, feeling guilty can develop empathy, which leads to less conflict and animosity among people. That’s demonstrably a good thing. Studies are available to prove this (“The Surprising Emotion That Can Make You A Better Person”). According to one expert, “Guilt is likely to steer us in a corrective direction if it's well placed.”

He actually demonstrates exactly what Right Wing parents fear - that their kids learning the truth will develop empathy and the desire to reform in those kids, thereby undermining white supremacy.

The problem with this line of thought is that you completely ignore the willingness of certain followers of the MAGA movement to stoop to the lowest possible hinge to find any lining to argue in support of whatever people like DeSantis say and do. Look at this thread, over 550 posts, where there remain a few who argue, apologize, rationalize and excuse an objectively detestable school “lesson.”

 

Not only did blacks learn useful skills in slavery, they would also go on to appear or even star in every TV commercial.

 

Last week I read a poll that asserted that greater number of true independents saw Democrats as extreme than Republican. True independents don't vote straight ticket. A Bernie Bro may identify as independent but he's not voting Republican. Shawn Hannity isn't a Republican but he's not voting Democrat. It is telling that you only see Republicans as extreme and believe only they need to change.

When you read through the Florida curriculum there's a bunch of stuff about indentured servitude in colonial America and slavery in Africa. Read through the national AP curriculum and none of that stuff is in there. The Florida agenda is clear.

Republican presidential candidate Tim Scott on Thursday criticized competitor Ron DeSantis on his support for Florida education standards requiring students to be instructed on the “benefits” of slavery.

Asked by a POLITICO reporter about the curriculum requirement at a campaign stop outside Des Moines, the South Carolina senator said he hoped that “every person in our country, and certainly running for president, would appreciate that” slavery had no benefits to enslaved people.

“There is no silver lining in slavery,” Scott said. “Slavery was really about separating families, about mutilating humans and even raping their wives. It was just devastating.”

 

I do think the FDOE should remove the bullet point and not have teachers discuss this. It is wrong for sure. What I do find fascinating is some on this board saying this is racist was also on board for having the AP African studies being put through to be taught in FL. Well, they discuss this same topic as well in the AP course. No one from the VP to anyone on this site seemed to have an issue with it then.

 

Scott suggested that Desi was having a bad day and should reconsider. He didn't call him out for his statements and actions that document his true nature.
