I want to add that, according to this article, Portugal has slashed the funding for these drug treatment initiatives to less than ~20% of initial amounts (factoring in 20 years of inflation) when they began this policy change in 2001.

That is undoubtedly the major contributor to the reduced effectiveness of the strategy. In fact, that's such a drastic change in funding, I'm not sure we can even say that Portugal's current platform is the same as what was originally successful. It seems to me their policy has changed from "decriminalize and then treat addicts/abusers" to "decriminalize and do little else."

That said, this craze mindset change that things like drug abuse and homelessness are inalienable human rights that must be respected and allowed, seems a perverse mutation from initial focus of helping these people to maximize societal harmony.

The vape stuff is generally odorless to people around the user

It might be odorless but I still hate that smoke in my face.

A buddy has a something that looks like a car key fob. He just sucks on it. Not much if any discernible smoke pleasant high. I used to have a card but I have an addictive personality I do everything that feels good makes me happy to excess. I had to quit drinking 5 years ago cold Turkey cause I wasn’t going to win that battle. I tried pot which I hadn’t used since college and sure enough used to excess. I do enjoy it occasionally when my friends give me one. After going a couple of months without 2 gummies deliver an very nice high.

Haven't smoked weed in 40 years but what I remember and enjoyed was the "social aspect" of passing joints around the room while listening to music, drinking a cool one or two .... and discussing what not, perhaps planning what we were going to do (when) stoned. I just don't know if eating gummies or ingesting THC in some other form would be as enjoyable as "smoking doobies" with friends. Maybe I'll find out one day.

I would make all of these drugs legal, but only when having sex with a prostitute.

Speed ball in the morning followed by a dose of Fentanyl, with a boilermaker and a doobie to level it out!

God I love getting up every day!

Sure but comparatively it’s nothing. I remember eating in restaurants with smoking permitted. Unreal that everyone just dealt with that. Come home from literally anywhere in public with people congregated and smell like an ashtray. Vape is a massive improvement.

weed vapes expel next to nothing. i've done em in theaters, etc. vaped in the backseat & my in-laws up front were none the wiser.

used to see shows at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room in St. Louis. basement dive with smoking. My wife could insta smell it from upstairs & I would change clothes downstairs

I remember the tobacco smoking amendment about 20 years ago. People were mostly arguing about worker safety versus property rights, although I'm sure some people just didn't like the smell. If I recall, though, even that only applied to enclosed spaces where food was served, etc. Amazing to think people used to actually smoke on airplanes.

like most things, anti smoking zealotry was gone too far. Many college campuses don't allow smoking OR vaping even outside. stupid.

But the war on drugs made this country a lot safer. It is no coincidence that the crime rate, which was rampant in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, starting decreasing greatly once Ronald Reagan intensified the war on drugs during his administration.

And being Fetanyl and related drugs kill more Americans than guns and cars combined, maybe we need to revisit the our policies regarding the use of illegal drugs in this country.

Man I used to love 8 balls. Very sad I’m now a man without vices (except for exercise). I get high off of that.

I have not seen research that the WoD has reduced crime. It sure has packed the prisons tho. 1 of the many bad things about the WoD is it made a lot of Americans criminals & it directly engendered a distrust of the police. Which sucks for the police too. In 2008, In Amsterdam, I was gliding down the boulevard with weed in my pocket & a 1/2 liter of Tuborg in my hand. I walked through a few cops & was glad to see them.

further, IMO shit like crack & fentanyl is mostly a result of the WoD & Fentanyl showing up in coke, pills, etc is certainly due to the WoD. Just like alcohol prohibition led to much stronger & more dangerous liquor.

Colorado is so damn free, I ain't even a criminal anymore. I'm a victim of too much freedom!

Incorrect! Americans started getting older. That’s the driving force. War on drugs an abject racist failure. Didn’t stop anyone including me from getting my fill but unnecessarily caused drug price inflation. VERY UNFAIR! Not that I know first hand but you can get a g of white in Panama for $30
