Never thought of it but my dad was kind of like a colder meaner version of Red Forman. He also was from Wisconsin.
Had a few Skynyrd eight tracks when I got my first car (used VW bug) in ‘74, my senior year of high school. I first saw them play two or three years earlier at a dance mixer for the boarders with the Bartram bunnies in Bolles Hall. They were just a local Jacksonville bar band at the time but they were loud and had a lot of energy!
My dad bought us this recorder in the early 70s that had 2 big rolls of tape side by side. I can't remember what they call it. We had hours of Beatles, Led, Black sabbath, etc. in it. If the tape broke, we splice it with Scotch tape and it's good to go again.
Open reel, or “reel to reel”. I had one — a Teac A-4300. Set at max speed 7-1/2 in/sec with a Maxell UD-XL tape the sound quality was awesome. Think 7-1/2 in/sec for a minute — that’s a lot of tape flying past the record and playback heads. Audiophile stuff. Cassettes couldn’t touch that.

When I was in 10th grade at Pcola Christian and my hoped for girlfriend said: "I don't think so" Barry and his hit tune "Mandy" came on. I sat down and cried. Picked up hardrock forever after. Wang Dang Sweet Poontang comes to mind.
