you are correct. He actually got rid of all retired numbers that year, including his own. I think Ben Hanks may have had academic issue/concerns getting into UF and Spurrier was impressed with Hanks determination and academic seriousness and improvement so gave him his own jersey number when he enrolled. Or something like that.

In 1981 I asked for a cassette player for my Honda cvc. My parents got me an 8 track player. Lol it was better than the am radio that it had.
