the bomb on Hiroshima not only saved 100s of thousands of Japanese lives, but probably the nation of Japan itself. Most importantly it saved American lives. If the Japanese kids are taught the truth, then yes they will learn that although the bomb was horrific, it ended the war and thus had a positive impact on Japan. Read this carefully: a positive impact, which is different from saying the bomb was wholly positive.(which obviously it was not). All of life’s moments have something positive to offer, you just have to be willing to look for it.

You do realize that the State’s standards which are the topic of this thread represents a broad outline of topics, right? Nothing is missing because no specifics are included.

Yes, but they made sure to include that slaves learned beneficial skills. Why is that?

I could even accept that sort of lesson if they properly contextualized it by also including discussion of what slavery deprived them of and the harm that caused even post emancipation. But Florida did not do that (unsurprisingly).

Frankly, the curriculum as a whole is bad. We could do a lot better. Of course, my point wouldn't be to toss the entire curriculum, but to instead better contextualize various issues and stop trying to downplay the evils of our country's past.

Nope, the indoctrination thing is very real, as evidenced by DeSantis's attempt at it. It goes back a ways too. When I was in school in the early 80s my high school teacher insisted that the Civil War was not about slavery, but states rights. DeSantis was teaching his students the same thing when he was a history teacher in Georgia.

Well most of the 502 other posts disagree with you, even numerous conservatives. Only a few are actually in favor of students being taught that slaves learned beneficial skills.

To be clear, I'm not categorically opposed to a lesson that enslaved persons had or developed skills they used successfully after becoming free, but it has to be contextualized properly by also discussing what enslaved persons (and their descendants) were denied and the oppressive systems that ensnared so many of them post emancipation because of what they were denied.

Florida's standards don't offer that context. Divorced of that context, it is simply an attempt to downplay the severity and harm of slavery.

well, I checked with Ron Desantis tonight and he said he’s using your liberal tears to wash the “dirt” off his boots after removing them from Disney’s sphincter, and that your disagreements with Florida’s history curriculum will be given “due” consideration. So there’s that……

I think it's pointless. Free Blacks developed skills too, the normal way people do, by applying themselves and learning the skills they wanted to learn.

Man you're funny to debate. As a lawyer, I'd think you'd be better at this stuff. I was a responding to your post about indoctrination being a hoax. I was actually agreeing with you that it's not, as I was a witness to it at my high school in south Florida, where they taught that the Civil War was a dispute over states rights and not slavery.

You can easily make a point out of it. You're going to have lessons on the sort of labor enslaved persons did. It then allows you to spotlight the resilience of people who overcame their circumstances. And I'm not categorically opposed to that if you properly contextualize it.

We'll just have to disagree on this one. There's plenty of ways to highlight the resiliency of slaves and Blacks during those times without pointing out that slavery was at least in some ways beneficial to them.
