New Florida curriculum says slavery had “personal benefits” for slaves

So if your single criteria is truth, don't you think the curriculum should include that it was illegal to teach slaves to read? That's a skill. Why omit that truth but include that 'slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.'?

Ever visit the Hiroshima WWII museum? Do you think the placards include statements about the how the bomb was beneficial for Japanese citizens? Hint: It does not. Now ask yourself why not? Do you think Japanese children are taught that the bombs were ultimately beneficial for Japanese people?

Widen your lens and try to consider this from the perspective of an African American student who goes home and tells their parents/grandparents about how slaves benefited from skills developed in bondage.

Even DeSantis and his crony education dictator disagrees with your criterion.

I don't know you, but admire how you are fighting uphill here. I am older than most on here and about to turn 88 next month, have known at least a dozen UF lawyers as well as about three UF judges. When did our law school start being as liberal as it now appears? Most of my friends who were lawyers, were basically conservative in nature, even though some were actually democrats. It's unnerving at best, but not much I can do about it. Keep up the fight, but just wanted you to know I support you. Go Gators!

When educated people started abandoning the Republican Party for embracing anti-intellectualism, like attacking higher education or teaching about the silver linings of slavery. Not surprised an 87 year old white man is unbothered by this. You were likely taught the Lost Cause version of history pushed by white supremacists when you were young.

As I take it, you believe your knowledge is better than mine, and you wonder why I don't agree with you. Good luck with that! By the way, I was mainly conferring with another UFlawyer, so I am not interested in your opinion on the matter.

You're taking it wrong, then. What I am saying is that I am unsurprised you're not horrified by this when you were likely taught a worse and much more racist version of history as a child.

Coral Gables HS was probably the best in the state when I attended. I learned the good as well as the bad of everything. Who are you to question my education, were you actually there? Typical liberal response to an intellectual conversation when you have no actually knowledge in the matter.

It’s because many 87 years old white men spend their days watching Fox News and have been completely indoctrinated with their false narratives and agenda driven finger-pointing fear porn. I strongly suspect that the 87 year old man absolutely despises what the “woke liberals” have done to this country, all without having an inkling as to how to define exactly what woke means.

It should be noted that you questioned my knowledge compared to the authors who misidentified people as slaves who were never slaves or claimed they gained skills in professions that weren't actually their professions. And you did so despite the fact that this had already been covered in the thread. So would you say that you had a typical conservative response in doing so?

You said you turn 88 next month. That means you were born in 1935. That means your elementary to high school years were during the 1940s to the early 1950s. Jim Crow was still in effect in Florida at that time. We had white supremacist politicians running the state who subscribed to the Lost Cause. You can get angry and defensive, but it doesn't change the facts of the time.

Talk about your insults, but that takes the cake. I am not Joe Biden, my thought process is still spot on, so you must know you insulted me, right? I have understood every post on here, but just because I don't agree with you, you choose to refer to me as too old to understand. How do you people live in this world?

You say you “read every post on here,” after saying in your first post a few pages back that you decided to skip the entire thread and just give your 2 cents. Then, you claim you’re not “Joe Biden,” which I assume you meant that you’re not a senile old man (which I did nit call you or even insinuate). You end the post with, “How do you people live in this world.”

These are pretty base-line, tell-take signs of perma-Fox News watchers, particularly 87 year old white men. You might not realize it, but you are squarely in the Foxian demographic.

Heck, my father is an 87 year old white man, and probably the smartest guy I’ve ever met. But the last few years, like his friends, he’s become a walking parrot of Foxian talking points. He doesn’t realize he has been indoctrinated, but he has absolutely been indoctrinated.

You can take offense, but I’m guessing you are in fact a frequent Fox News viewer. You’re not open to political debate, and you’re set on your hatred of all things “leftie”.

And, to be fair, it is entirely conceivable that I am projecting my vision of my father onto you (other than his current political blindness, that is about as high of a compliment that any man can receive), and that might not be fair. And so if you’re not a Fox viewer, I apologize for that projection. And if in fact you fit the description, then your views are not your fault.
