He must have been a pretty good athlete....he started his final year at UF at CB and played effectively.
As I recall, John L had 104 yards on 4 carries that game, coming off an injury and didn't play much. My aunt was Neal Anderson's English teacher in Graceville and he was in one of my classes at UF. We talked a little bit, super nice guy.
I am interested to see if we will see some two back formations this season. I would be surprised if we see both Etienne and Johnson on the field at the same time the way you would see the Hampton/ Williams/ Anderson combo. I think the most dangerous Gator backfield (though neither was a traditional running back) was Tebow and Percy.
He led the Gators in rushing in both 95 & 96 and then switched to CB for his senior season. Played corner for 4 years with the Falcons. He was similar to Ahmad Black in that the total package was greater than the sum of the parts.
I read a while back that Neal now owns a 2000-acre peanut farm around Williston and is also in banking.
Was going to reply with something similar. Tebow+Percy+Demps+Rainey was lethal and should be considered in the convo. But yeah, not a duo.
Fred Taylor and Neal Anderson were better than anyone in our backfield right now. The other backs no matter which ones you pick to make your duo are still better than what we have now. Tgat doesn’t mean that by years end that we may revisit this but not even close yet.
Anderson and Taylor are nfl greats. These guy aren’t even college greats yet. They are awesome, hard edge players tgat I love but they aren’t the ones starting this garbage.
Casares was one of the best athletes to ever play at UF. Captain of the boxing team, played basketball & was a great NFL player for the 63 NFL Champion Chicago Bears. He is still the Bears’ 4th leading career rusher behind Neal Anderson & ahead of Gale Sayers.
I agree 100% but it's almost not fair to judge RB's these days on when they were drafted because back then good RB were actually appreciated and sought after in the NFL, these days they're almost an after thought to the point that the leagues top RB's the other day all had a Zoom call tontalk about the state of the position and its percieved value. Crazy because i still love me a spectacular RB over most positions.
What about Willie Wilder, Earl Carr and Tony Green? Not a duo but just sayin’ “Wes Chandler was Percy Harvin before Percy Harvin was born.”
Great too, lots of good answers in here, they were also almost all from back when the NFL actually valued the RB as a premier postion and drafted them high. Nowadays they are falling further and further down the draft boards. It's a shame imo as that can be the most electrifying position on the team.
Agree. Right now they are on par with the Perine & Scarlett duo IMO …which was pretty damn good. But the potential is there to make a jump if there is incremental improvement this season.
How about Joe Portale and Octavious Gould? Just kidding. Seriously the duo of John L and Neal was much more lethal because both were in backfield at same time, both could go long, both could catch passes, and both were capable of a 125+ yd game at any time.
