"slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit"

What would be a twisted interpretation of that statement?

put you rage in your pocket for a moment. True or false: slaves gained marketable skills by being slaves. My question was zero to do with the appropriateness of slavery. Keep your rage in your pocket. Just true or false on the assertion. If you answer false, can you tell us what “marketable skills” means?

True or false, concentration camp inmates got a free place to stay? True! Let's put it in the curriculum!

As for marketable skills, are you saying the slaves couldn't have gained them outside of slavery? Did they have to be slaves in order to gain skills?

That's a silly question and assumes the only way they could have gained skills was by being a slave. Did Africa not have barbers, farmers, sailors and blacksmiths? Of course they did

Don’t forget that you have to “both sides” Rosewood and the Ocoee Massacre.

Expire like a Norwegian Blue. I’d vote for his inclusion in hell but it doesn’t exist so I guess I never will.

Nothing needs to be twisted. The standard comes with a "clarification" noting the skills slaves gained and how they might benefit. Several members of the African American History task force were excluded from the revision of the standards. Instead the FL DOE kept three members of the task force and appointed 10 others to do their bidding.

‘I thank God for slavery:’ Florida African American History Task Force appointments raise concerns

I'm not a history or social studies teacher, but a quick look at the African American history standards is troublesome, imo. In addition to the "skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit" (bottom of p. 6), the history appears to be slanted in order to neglect many of the struggles faced by AAs throughout the history of the U.S. while focusing on all the great and wonderful things contributed and experienced by AAs.

In a standard regarding the slave trade in the Colonies, a clarification is included to ensure that "Instruction includes how slavery was utilized in Asian, European and African cultures." Perhaps that is a reasonable item on its own, but in relation to the specific standard, it appears to be a way of saying "well people did these horrible things to black people in other places too." - Just my interpretation

As you can see, people usually won't quit discussing a topic just because you said you saw someone say something on TV.
Maybe you should explain what exactly you think is fake.

That's what happens when people are either too lazy to completely investigate something before they pop off or simply don't care.

Most of your post is quite reasonable so I have no problem with it, that said I truly believe any attempt to actually write the curriculum would eventually write something someone else would find fault with. The fault I find is that those with an agenda will blow it all out of proportion, which has happened here.

Divert, deflect, dodge…blah blah blah. were you afraid to answer the question, or you just don’t have the skill set to do so?

Can you think of any scenario where the skills of former slaves may become relevant in the teaching of slavery and its aftermath?

You just can't help being an ahole, can you?

As for the bolded question, no, I can't. Do you think free Blacks couldn't have learned those same skills? Do you think post-slavery, that Blacks were unable to learn how to be a blacksmith or a farmer the normal way?

silly question? Do you think your example is any more silly than the question that you’re claiming is silly. You and your liberal friends are getting your panties, all tied up in a wad, because somebody stated a truth that is a topic in a history class. If the topic was actually slaves learned how to be farmers only because they were slaves, then maybe you’d have a F’ing point. But that’s not the topic, which is why you don’t have a F’ing point.

I found that even more offensive than the absurd narrative about slaves developing marketable skills. At least there was a very small grain of truth to the latter since a tiny fraction of former slaves benefited from skills that they acquired while enslaved during the period immediately following emancipation. There is absolutely no way that the atrocities of the Rosewood and Ocoee massacres could ever be rationalized.

no, that’s the effing problem here. Nobody said that except you trying to change the subject. You guys are so caught up in your ridiculous unwarranted outrage that you refuse to acknowledge that this topic is TRUE.

How many threads have you seen in the past few years strongly criticizing the standards used for Black history in Florida?

this is so typical of people that don’t have sex on their side during an argument. Nobody said anything about being able to obtain these skills and other manners. You folks just like to add facts into the discussion in order to try to convince yourself and others that your meritless position would have merit if we just add some more facts to create a new discussion. This issue is simple, which is why I posted a simple question. Is the assertion in this curriculum true or false. All of the other crap that you people are throwing out is nothing but noise. You refuse to admit that the information is in fact, true. You can bitch and complain all you want about the “ramifications” of teaching uncomfortable truths, but at the end of the day the assertion is true. It’s a effing history course for crying out load. And that effing truth is important to understand the evolution of slavery into Jim Crow into racism.

perhaps, instead of being so upset about the truth, why don’t the dozen or so of you social justice warriors on this forum complaining about it, come up with ideas on how that truth can be turned into a positive teaching moment.
