Go totally rogue and have a couple of Bud Lights to wash down some Chick-fil-A sandwiches while watching Barbie.
I already chugged Adrenochrome Heavy at the Kid Rock concert where he covered the Dixie Chicks. I feel like I have satisfied my conflict quota.
I saw Barbie tonight. I guess by the dictionary definition it is still a satire, but it's not subtle at all. It's a maximalist film not only visually, but in the dialogue as well.
At the risk of offending posters on both extremes of the political spectrum if the producers wanted to be true to the dolls upon the which the characters in the movie are based they should have cast a transman in the role of Ken rather than Ryan Gosling. That Ken would have been more like the doll at least anatomically than Gosling.
Sarah Silverman noted that Barbie doesn't have nipples. Interesting, but then I thought, wait, does Ken have nipples? I don't think so. As you note, that's not all he's missing. Not sure I really understood her point, lol.
When I was a kid, a neighbor (girl) got in the car and immediately said, "Hey, did you know Barbie's measurements are 3- 2- 3 1/2?" My mom couldn't stop laughing and I still think it's funny.
Found on the web so it has to be accurate. ✓ If Barbie were an actual women, she would be 5'9” tall, have a 39” bust, an 18” waist, 33” hips and a size 3 shoe! This too... ✓ Margot Robbie is 5'6" with estimated body measurements of 34-24-35 and a size 7 shoe.
Margot was great in the movie and she is really the driving force behind the film - conceived of it and got the rights from Mattel. They also had a fun gag about her beauty, pace I,Tonya. A lot of people noted that in I, Tonya, it's not very convincing to have her play a woman that states that she feels she's just not pretty enough for what she wants to accomplish, although she did a great acting job. There's a part in Barbie where Barbie is expressing similar self-doubt about her appearance and they literally have a voiceover that says words to the effect that "Note to the makers of this movie. Margot Robbie is the wrong person to cast for this part". It was funny
From my daughter who saw it in Burbank with a ton of people who work in the industry. She saw both movies back to back as part of a big group It was really incredible at the theater yesterday. It was a party atmosphere the whole day. Hard to describe and you had to be there. But I haven't had a crowd experience like that in a long, long time
Somewhat off-topic, but your post made me wonder if the people who are on strike in Hollywood are still allowed to go to movies?
Definitely. She is a not a member of any striking guild, but you're definitely allowed to go. Most theatres in Century City and Burbank were sold out, largely with back to backs, and had lines out the door to pose with the cutouts and sidewalk setups for parties. A lot of companies bought out a showing for their employees. Given recent problems, most everyone in the industry was truly happy to see 2 "original" movies with 2 respected directors debut together with a lot of buzz. Most migrated to LA (as did my daughter) because they love film. They live for cultural events like this weekend. My daughter would always ask what it was like to see Star Wars Opening Day in 77, etc.
