Most are, because we seem resistant to statistics. Almost all cases of so-called human trafficking are in fact runaways turned sex workers And almost all abductees are family custody disputes. Here is a link picking up on the debunking podcast which I first listened to - You're Wrong About

Podcast Eviscerates Moral Panic of Human Trafficking

Here is a recent thread I bookmarked

Edited to add: Law Enforcement routinely issues press releases on big "busts" they call human trafficking which are in fact simple prostitution

I saw Oppenheimer last night. Not what I was expecting. Thought it’s was good though.

Lots of women and girls in Barbie pink all over the place going to the other movie. I am guessing both movies did well.

And just to be real… the top grossing movie so far in 2023… is Super Mario Bros.

Yea the last point about Super Mario Brothers is weird. What I worry about is that it just reinforces that the best way to make money is either go horror or draw on existing IP, in this case a video game. It wasn’t highly reviewed but it's coming to Peacock in a few weeks so I may give it a shot just to see what the big deal was.

I played the song for my daughter when she was home for Father's Day figuring it would get play due to the Oppenheimer line. She really liked it, for that message. Also Children's Crusade

interesting take. imo our constant news cycle with its bombastic presentation results in making many overly fearful and stressed, especially parents. (also helps motivate maga movement, but a different conversation).
But just not sure if concerns of human trafficking are overstated. I’ll check out your link.
Actually topic is deserving of its own thread.

I think they pretty much proved that there is really no kidnapping into sexual slavery of any measurable significance, much less sufficient to create a moral panic. But read or listen to the links and let me know what you think.

Just got out of Barbie. Very strong. Very unique. Be prepared. Women applauded out loud twice and at the end. Lots of pink both on screen and in the audience

Yeah, we're going to need your Oppenheimer review asap sans whatever I understand is a twist. I don't want to accidentally read that, lol.

    :)

I have never, ever understood the Barbie brand at all. Was disinclined to see the movie, but the reviews have been positive so I'm sure I will rent it whenever that is available.

Adding the caveat that I haven't seen the movie the reviews that I have read have been generally positive with the film best being characterized as comedic satire. Although I doubt that I will pay to see it an a movie theater I will definitely watch it when it becomes available through streaming or cable.

We have tickets for tomorrow, although we talked about whether it is too much for one weekend at our age. But still planning to go.

It really leans into what Barbie means good and bad. A substantial part of the movie I didn’t think they were pulling it off, but one call back at the end made us decide it pulled it off with power. Very emotionally resonant

We took the kids to see Super Mario Bros, and it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. In fact, the moment to moment happenings were enjoyable. The story was just totally devoid of depth - good guys battling bad guys for no reason.

As for a recent kids film that had real depth: Marcel the Shell. I’d definitely recommend if you haven’t yet seen it.

Ah, nice, I don't know why in my mind you were doing both on the same day. I thought that was a bit ambitious, lol.
