What I don’t understand is why they risk the dangerous, illegal crossings. Why don’t they just show up at a legal border point of entry, present themselves, and request asylum?

Because the Biden administration, like the Trump administration, put a rule in place to prevent it.

So someone crossing illegally can request asylum, but someone who shows up at a border point cannot. That’s about as ridiculous as you can get.

In either case, they're getting pushed through expedited removal, and at the port of entry, they may just send them back without letting them in. So there's no benefit to going to the port of entry unless you have an appointment, which are very hard to get.

A judge just heard arguments on the legality of the policy and will rule soon. This judge struck down a similar policy when Trump used it back in 2019.

Isn't that the way it's been with the Cuban refugees since the beginning? Once they got their feet of dry US land they could stay, but up until that point they were turned back?

but Moses parted a sea so the migrants he was shepherding could walk on dry land. ;)

Desperate enough humans will do just about anything to save their life, including risking death.

It's hard for most people to wrap their head around that level of desperation and all that it entails.

About how laws seem to work in some cases and not in other cases. Yes... we still have laws.

3-year-old riding one of Texas’ migrant buses dies on the way to Chicago, officials say | AP News

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A 3-year-old child riding one of Texas’ migrant buses died while on the way to Chicago, officials said Friday, the first time the state has announced a death since it began shuttling thousands of migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border last year.

Texas authorities confirmed a child’s death in a statement Friday but did not say where the child was from or why they became ill. The Illinois Department of Public Health said the child was 3 years old and died Thursday in Marion County, in the southern part of that state.

“Every loss of life is a tragedy,” the Texas Division of Emergency Management said in a statement. “Once the child presented with health concerns, the bus pulled over and security personnel on board called 9-1-1 for emergency attention.”

Texas has bused more than 30,000 migrants to Democratic-controlled cities across the U.S. since last year as part of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s sprawling mission on the border, called Operation Lone Star. The operation has come under a burst of new scrutiny in recent months over additional hard-line measures the governor has authorized in the name of deterring migrants from crossing from Mexico.

Actually I think that became the policy some time in the '90s. Before then all Cuban refugees fleeing to the US regardless of where they were located were deemed entitled to asylum by definition. I recall complaints in the '70s and '80s regarding the disparate treatment of Haitian refugees compared with Cubans with the former being turned back and held at Guantanamo if found on the high seas while Cubans regardless of where they were located beinf=g automatically entitled to asylum.

Federal judge orders Texas to remove floating barriers aimed at deterring migrants on Rio Grande | CNN Politics

    (CNN) —

A federal judge ordered Texas to remove floating barriers in the Rio Grande and barred the state from building new or placing additional buoys in the river, according to a Wednesday court filing, marking a victory for the Biden administration.

The judge ordered Texas to take down the barriers by September 15 at its own expense.

In July, the Justice Department sued the state of Texas over its use of floating barriers in the Rio Grande, which Gov. Greg Abbott has argued are intended to deter migrants from crossing into the state from Mexico.

In the lawsuit, filed in US District Court in the Western District of Texas, the Justice Department alleged that Texas and Abbott, a Republican, violated the Rivers and Harbors Appropriation Act by building a structure in US water without permission from United States Army Corps of Engineers and sought an injunction to bar Texas from building additional barriers in the river.

I'm not a GOP apologist but barriers in the river seems like a pretty cheap, effective way to combat illegal crossings. I get they are in US waters without permission, but doesn't seem like a bad concept where crossings are common.
