That’s kind of my point. Not writing your own songs isn’t that big of a deal for a singer but that’s what he decided to ridicule him about. Maybe he should call him out for continually picking horrible songs. Or telling him that if he were a better singer, talented songwriters would want to work with him. I just don’t think “you don’t write your own songs” is that big of a deal.

JI's comments were in the context of JA telling people what the song is & isn't about. Makes sense to me when this assclown is running around trying to explain what other people mean.

I’m not an Andean fan.. Isbell is a little better I guess.. but two things from this story stick out to me
    1. So many songs with so many clearly objectionable lyrics never got pulled or caused an issue. It doesn’t take long to look through songs of different genres and find some with misogynistic, targeted violence, objectionable language… why this song?
    2. I didn’t read the whole thread… did ALDEAN pick where the video was shot? I think that town/ courthouse has been in several commercials/ videos before ( read that). If some scout/video exec picked it out I’m having Aj difficult time linking it to racist overtones.

wrt #1. I think you are off topic. Don't know what you mean by "pulled". CMT pulled it. I doubt CMT has ever played songs with clearly objectionable lyrics. You can't pull something that was never even given consideration.

If you google this song, it & its video are all over the place.

I might be off topic.. but when those that are upset and complaining listen to music/ songs/art that clearly has objectionable content I find their complaint hollow. CMT pulled the music because of the outcry and insistence that it is racists. I think linking the lyrics ( I read those) to clear racist intent is a stretch. The courthouse setting MIGHT be a clear connection unless that location was chosen by a company/scout/person just looking for great locations. I know 2 of my homes have been scouted for a movie and a music video. The person scouting didn’t ask anything about the history, the cumture etc.. just wanted to know if they could shoot and use the properties in the different scenes. Rid that’s what happened with the court house then yeah.. it’s pure coincidence.

I appreciate that there always been debates about what constitutes “real” country music. But I can’t tell what differentiates that song from other pop/party songs, if anything? Granted I have no musical talent at all.

where have you been? People have agendas. Did you miss what happened to the Dixie Chicks? You think those same people are outraged over this? Did you miss Sinead O'Conner & the outrage that ensued? Have you not heard the almost annual bitchfest after the superbowl? Nearly no one aspires to be fair & balanced when it comes to things likes. Also, though, that does not mean they condone it either.

I used to run with a really smart dude & we had some really good arguments from Billy Gibbons to the origin of the universe. Twice, I thought he made bad pts that I recall 20 years later. The relevant one here is that he told me about an opinion piece in the paper & complained that it was not objective & only told 1 side of story. DUH!!!!

I think of things like this as an opinion piece, people are trying to shill for their side, their values, their pt of view. They are not trying to be objective. this happens on 2 hot all the time. & there is nothing wrong with it. You argue for your pt. I'll argue from mine.

I'm with you. I've spent WAY too much time on this issue. This is exactly what Nashville wants. Turns out, its been this way since at least the 50s. They've always tried to de-country country music. See the obligatory string sections & backup singers back in the day cuz that's what pop was doing. They didn't want it to be associated with hillbillies or actual country folks. They wanted it to sound almost just like the POP of the day. Hitting the pop charts was hugely important to them. Why? $$$$$. No problem with that, I guess, but they tried to shut down "real" country music wherever it reared up. Why? They did not want to be associated with it. Nashville hated Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, Ralph Mooney, etc. Oh, & they loathed the banjo & even mandolin. I associate twangy guitar & pedal steel with country music....they hated it.

The word cover as in cover song came from Nashville hearing a regionally popular song & jumping to cover the country with their version before the org could gain traction.

    Umm ok.
And no.. I don’t know what happened to the Dixie Chicks, Siena’s oConnor or after every superbowl( although I do think that CS nailed it this year..).
I also never said that you or anyone else can’t argue from your view point. I did say that those that complain about this song with nebulous ties at best to racism while listening to “their” music with clear violence to women, hate filled lyrics sound hollow to me.
And I have said it multiple times on here
There are a few things that I believe are serious enough that you don’t claim them with out hard core evidence/proof.
Racism is one of them. Again my opinion.. you are welcome to yours.

sounds like a lot of speculation on your part. Who are these people trashing Aldean & supporting violent music? Are there some, I would guess yes. Let's take Jason Isbell who's called out Aldean (mostly for sucking in general). He is quite outspoken about hate filled & misogynistic anything. Transgender pushing Bud Light - agenda, Tom Brady pusing rental cars....not agenda.

Was listening to an interview with Liz Phair last week (she's written all of her own songs FYI) & she said the big diff between me & those that ridiculed me for being ambitious is that I was not scared to put my music out into the world & have it reviewed & criticized. Aldean is a big boy. I think he's gonna be just fine. Liz Phair fun fact. Here granddad wanted her to be named Sunny Ann. :)

I truly don’t care if he is fine or not. I just don’t see the lyrics as racists, I don’t think the courthouse scene(which has been in several articles as evidence of racism.. even mentioned here in this thread) is likely to even truly be connected with ALDEAN but chosen by some rando working for the company that produced the video.
And I said that anyone that is upset about this song while listening to other terrible stuff has a hollow voice to me? How is that speculation? I think at this point you are just looking to argue. That’s fine.
I don’t like JA or his music.. can’t name a single song he sings. I just don’t find this song racist and find the uproar about it contrived. My opinion.

Ha, yeah, I feel like use a banjo or fiddle at least lol. Now it’s just like find somebody with a southern accent and call it country.

I actually love a lot of old country by the way. Hank Jr., Randy Travis, Waylon, Mark Chestnut, George Straight, Brooks & Dunn and many others. I do like Stapleton but a lot of new stuff just sounds kinda soulless to me. I place a lot of blame on Toby Keith circa 2000 and after.

I will admit that the Chicken Fried song by Zach Brown is catchy to me. It’s silly but I like it. Definitely not a music snob or anything.

Incorrect. Few few musicians become popular stars and to a certain extent those popular stars became stars for their image or sound. Some of them have producers who write or staff composers whose music they perform. The plain fact, though, is that ANY musician/band with real musical skill writes their own music. The producers, however, have a say in which music gets recorded and distributed. I don't know a single professional musician who doesn't write music.

If you disagree, please name two or three excellent musicians who you think don't write their own music. We're not talking about the Backstreet Boys here.

Apparently Trampled by Turtles is from Duluth. I play with a keyboard/guitar player who subs with them regularly, but I don't know their music at all. Are they good?

Dude? What? Listen … I’m not sure what your angle here is. I’m not arguing with you I’m not defending ALDEAN, i just dont care. I for the life of me can’t figure out what your deal is. Please please point out where I said country music doesn’t have hypocrisy in it? I never came close to that. What tree are you barking u0?
    Actually
    Don’t answer.
