We still have LEGAL IMMIGRATION... NOT one other country on Earth allows illegal immigration into their sovereign country. And we allow for more LEGAL immigration into our country than any other country on Earth.

Well, that is quite the tautology. By definition, if immigration is illegal, it isn't allowed. And, by definition, if it is legal, it is allowed.

The issue is that in the 19th century, we didn't have the quotas or the restrictions that result in things like massive labor shortages and massive attempts of labor suppliers to fill those shortages only to be met by big government. We let the market decide how many people we needed in this country and wrote down your name, made sure you didn't have a contagious disease, and let you in the country.

Not all countries have quotas on immigrants. Sorry that the bumper sticker doesn't fit.

Who in the hail is talking about the 19th century?

I'm not talking about quotas, I'm talking about being more than generous about immigration. Besides that NO ONE has the "right" to force their way into our country illegally.

Well, considering we were discussing the Statue of Liberty, a monument from the 19th Century with the 19th Century policy in mind, everybody that can follow along.

"More generous" means what exactly aside from quotas?

While the lines from the Emma Lazarus poem have no legal significance both the Statue of Liberty have significant cultural significance. While conceding that the US has a long history of nativism we used to honor the thoughts behind Emma Lazarus's poem, the New Colossus.
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
While they were almost certainly unaware of the poem I can assure that all four of my grandparents when they passed by the Statute of Liberty on their way to Ellis Island knew that they were being welcomed into the country. By the way it's almost a standard line that when talking about family history a lot of American mention that their immigrant ancestor entered the country legally while failing to note the prior to the Immigration Act of 1924 virtually everyone (Chinese excepted) who wanted to immigrant to the US was allowed to enter the country.

LMFAO! Follow along? Quit your zigzagging. I'm talking about TODAY'S immigration, and you toss in the Statue of Liberty crap... and then you carry on into that... Lol. You just don't know what you want to say... nor point you want to make.

It means we don't need to apologize for NOT having open boarders... and we should keep them closed.

Okay, I responded to a post that mentioned the Statue of Liberty by bringing up the immigration policy of the time, which was consistent with the policy outlined by an American poet on that particular monument. If you can't follow for more than 2 posts, they are available for you to review before posting next time.

Oh, so we don't have "open boarders" (sic) now?

legit question here: which countries don’t have quotas on immigration? I did a quick Google, and could not find any examples. As an aside, everything that is out there, statistically, unequivocally provide that the United States is by far the most generous in immigration. But I was not able to locate any countries that had no restrictions or no quotas on immigration. I’m really curious if one actually exists.

When was the last time we had "closed" borders in this country and effectively kept people out? The answer is never. All we do is keep throwing good money after bad, and accomplish little. Meanwhile, we still have major labor shortages that effect inflation that can be helped by more immigration.

I think Azcat has good intentions, but the dude doesn't recognize just how small we are when it comes to the problem and how small most individual policies are.

Good for him helping a friendly neighbor. I'd like to think most of us would do the same. But that doesn't even scratch the surface when it comes to addressing the problem, nor does a guest-worker program... though if properly implemented can be a nice substantial step in a good direction.

Idealists like to think that little acts of kindness change the world. They're good and they have strong ripple effects, and we should all strive for that... but in a world of scarcity of resources, evil, and countless variations of values and cultures... kindness alone will never solve poverty, misery, nor will it maximize prosperity. In fact, running a government (or a business or a household) on kindness alone is a solid way of eventually crippling it. There will always be people whether by maliciousness or incompetence will drag down the rest of society with them. You have to make judgment calls that are in the best interest of the people you're responsible for while staying true to your values. It's always a difficult balance, but it's one that we all struggle with.

I think the Republicans have done a banger of a job on immigration by ignoring the problem while they are in power and blaming democrats when they are out of power. It’s just a game to them for the purpose of increased influence over illiterate easy to scare GOP voters. They don’t give a shit about the issue otherwise so you’re wasting your debate on them.

Us or anyone. Doesn’t happen in any country with big land borders. Not even DPRK. Maybe Israel. No one else. Not possible

i don't remember you being there when I was 11 years old and heard what my mother said. And, no, she didn't actually give any bullets or guns. She was making a point - and a good one that I still support. I have no issue with you or anyone else debating/disagreeing with policy positions. What I do take great offense with is your assertion that I am a liar. You are free to disagree with me, challenge my politics, etc., but calling me a liar will not stand. I know this is just an internet chat thing, and people write whatever they want. However, I draw the line when someone questions my honor and honesty. Yes, those words still have meaning to some of us.

Quotas are core to our current immigration policy, and are the reason desperate people show up at our border seeking sanctuary, because otherwise they'd have to wait decades to get through the queue from their country that allows only a handful of lawful immigrations per year.
