There is a loooong history of some Questionable lyrics in songs from every angle. But this one is pulled ? I’m not aldean fan. For country I Like like beachy Jimmy B and kenny. Also been to public enemy concert back with Favor Flav. To provide context Jason Aldean's music video for controversial song pulled by CMT | CNN
Seems like the concerns being raised were incredibly lost on him. The controversy over “Try That in a Small Town” reached a new level with the recent music video release for the song. Some viewers noticed scenes in the video were shot in front of what appears to be the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee. The courthouse has been the site of several incidents of racial violence, including the 1927 lynching of a Black man named Henry Choate. It also served as a backdrop for the Columbia Race Riot in 1946. The video also includes footage from police brutality protests and shots from surveillance cameras showing robberies. In a tweet on Tuesday, Aldean took issue with the criticism, writing, “There isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage.”
Country Music went woke years ago. And in any case, it has transformed from twang and a cowboy hat to backwards cap from Pennsylvania, over a soft rock beat, with obligatory references to trucks and beer.
Someone should write the counter-point song ... Throw around the n-word, have sex with goat, cook meth in your trailer, never brush your tooth, Try that in a big town...
Can't you just sing a song about lynching at a location of an historic lynching without people being so politically correct?
I think that’s a fair point. I’m no aldean fan and like more happy vibe like Kenny Chesney( plus I enjoy the female concert goers with white tank top and boots ) . I do like a posters idea of a counter song about meth in a trailer and sex with goats. I was Also a 90s fan of PE, Eazy etc and of course 2 Live Crew. Don’t like the idea of any of it ‘pulled’
I skimmed a story about the song yesterday and read some of the lyrics. Didn't get the racial angle at first, just thought he was talking beating or killing people because that's what they do in a small town. And I saw that he tried to tie it to his younger days when his town had a sense of community. He grew up in Macon, Ga. Not really a small town. And, no, it's not the kind of town where vigilantes chase down and kill people for burning the flag while the Macon Police Dept and Bibb County sheriff look the other way. Now that I see the racial angle ... good for CMT for pulling it.
No idea. Was there a riot there? Haven’t watched the whole thing. Damnit wasted 3 minutes watching and gosh that’s terrible music. I guess the background building is some significant courthouse? Seems a petty thing to get upset about considering last years number 1 song was WAP.
If I recall, one of the things that made 2 Live Crew so well known was that some of their music was banned and there were arrests of the rappers and record store owners in Florida. I would have been in middle school around that time and do recall the music being raunchy at least by the standards of the day. The anti-police rhetoric of NWA didn't go over well either, although I don't recall if there was any actual government censorship. I doubt any of that on MTV although I don't remember.
No, there was no riot there. Seems like using a site of a lynching is a calculated choice. Interestingly enough, a lot of the footage in the video was from Canada. Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That In a Small Town’ Uses Canadian Protest Videos – Rolling Stone
Valid and good point about that music not being on MTV Vs being banned. I had giant woofers in my car in high school and wasn’t afraid to turn it up. I prefer all the music be out there to be heard. I cringe at WAP song, but only because I have 2 Daughters. Wouldn’t give it a second thought otherwise.
