Despite the joys of family and close friends, I’ve little hope for the survival of our species. On the other hand, life across all species is governed by one impulse: to survive in order to procreate. This entails eat or be eaten, thereby guaranteeing conflict. It has also guaranteed that more than 99% of all organisms that have ever existed on earth are extinct.

    Is this all there is?

My dad’s side got here around 1680 +/-, according to the genealogy research he did. (He claimed the English kicked them out.) Does the length of my family’s stay in the New World/America necessarily prohibit the arrival of current aspirants? I don’t know by what logic. Besides, human evolution has been one giant diaspora. The cretins who think they can stem it only display their ignorance, not to mention lack of humanity.

The occasional stupid and/or silly meme.

And immigrants have been coming to the US for the same basic reasons for generations. Escaping awful situations in search for a better life. Be it Irish escaping famine, Jews escaping religious persecution, like my family, or C. Americans today escaping gang violence, the stories are all similar. They come to work, but those here call them freeloaders, lazy, etc. Just like NINA (No Irish Need Apply) signs in the past, today's anti-immigration people have similar v racist motives.

My ancestors didn't apply for anything, they just floated on over from England, about 200 years ago.

You fortunately don't understand the desperation these human beings, people like you and me, feel, as they feel the need to leave home, walk hundreds, if not thousands of miles, in order to escape horrid conditions and find a better life here. Maybe you should try a little empathy, and an ounce of humanity?

Not saying we should let everyone in through open borders. But pushing kids back into a raging river? Is this the country we aim to be?

Whether you liked it or not and it did bother me, Elion Gonzalez's father was his legal custodial parent. His mother and her boyfriend kidnapped him. There was a principle involved. Speaking hypothetically, if a Saudi Arabian father previously married to an American citizen kidnapped his child and returned to the Kingdom with the child because he didn't want the child brought up in the hedonistic culture of the US he could have invoked the Gonzalez case if Elion had been allowed to remain in the US with his American relatives. By the way although that example was a hypothetical there have been cases in which children of US citizens have been kidnapped and taken to foreign countries by the their non-custodial parents.

I share your thoughts and sentiments. On one hand, the world has changed for the better over time in many ways. But I also feel like we're just apes with technology that is way behind our capacity to handle. I was watching some videos this week about the Manhattan Project. I can't even imagine what the current weapons technology may be, but the fact that humans haven't blown up the Earth yet is a bit surprising to me.
