Senate Republicans fear constituents that are into conspiracies, not reality

    According to the Hill

Republican senators say they’re worried that conservative populism, though always a part of the GOP, is beginning to take over the party, becoming more radical and threatening to cause them significant political problems heading into the 2024 election.

GOP senators are saying they’re being increasingly confronted by constituents who buy into discredited conspiracy theories such as the claim that Democrats stole the 2020 presidential election or that federal agents incited the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Republican senators say they are alarmed at how many Republicans, including those with higher levels of education and income, buy the unsubstantiated claims that the last presidential election was stolen.

“There are people who surprise me — I’m surprised they have those views. It’s amazing to me the number of people, the kind of people who think the election was stolen,” the lawmaker said. “I don’t want to use this word but it’s not just a ‘red-neck’ thing. It’s people in business, the president of a bank, a doctor.”

The problem is the base and the lack of connection to reality. Not sure the Republic will survive

I’m still waiting to run into “anyone” in person who thinks the election was stolen and the FBI caused the riot at the capital.

If I do I’m gonna run away fast.

“Conspiracy theorist” is losing its shut-up sauce. It’s becoming another name for people who are tired of being right all the time.

I play ping-pong weekly with a woman who believes most of that. She also home-brewed ivermectin up until she had a stroke and heart attack.

I know quite a few. In fact, most Republicans and/or conservatives I know either believe in it totally or at least partially, in addition to several other conspiracies.

I have them in my family, including a brother. Plus some friends. One asked me to represent a friend arrested for "political protest", i.e. breaching the Capitol. Had to decline. Luckily, don't do criminal defense.

What I thought was interesting here, and why I posted it, were elected Republicans feeling like they cannot deal with their own constituents because of this widespread belief

Same reason they won't turn on Trump, they are terrified of the base.

Interesting that you have and I haven’t.

I guess you discuss politics with casual contacts, friends etc.? I learned to avoid political talk in person as it usually ends up with someone getting angry.

so your first post on this thread isn't really accurate. You don't know if you've run into anybody that thinks the election was stolen or that the FBI was behind 1/6. smart move IMO to avoid politics with most people

    Right here
Of the four conservatives who I’ve talked with about this stuff, three of them appear to be believers to some degree, including my semi-well off neighbor and two wealthy high status friends. Though I don’t think election denial would be a make or break for any of their votes. Instead, I think any Republican would be preferable to virtually any democrat.

I agree that would describe most people who say they believe. Especially if they were challenged. Even if you don't necessarily believe something, you tend to stick to it if it feels like you're challenged.

In my case, I also never bring it up. Two individuals who I know believe it include a friend who has mentioned it, although he's always very respectful. He's the one who asked me to represent his friend got arrested for breaching the Capitol. And my brother is totally out there. He believed in far right conspiracy theories long before Trump. I was truly worried he was among those that would be arrested and I still worry about what he might do one day.

I mean.. if you don’t talk politics with anyone (a good policy) then you don’t really know, and the reality is you probably don’t want to know.

But if you have a circle of friends that is representative of the Republican Party, it seems inescapable that a number of them have some crazed beliefs. It’s hard to say if it’s 80% or whatever the polls indicate, but it’s probably closer to that than your anecdotal zero. You almost have to have blinders to be at 0% because at least a small % are pretty vocal about it or make displays.

Not saying they don’t exist just that I haven’t personally heard anyone mention the election was stolen or the FBI caused the riot.
