They are the ones hiring labor after all. But I'm guessing management will point to the market, which as we can see is not rational at all as you have demonstrated. Would anyone argue that an athlete is correctly valued compared to a teacher in terms of utility or contributions to society? The athlete making that much is an outlier, even among professional athletes across all sports. Minor league baseball players make below minimum wage!
Owners value CEOs more than employees. It’s economics. If labor was organized this gap wouldn’t exist as much but that’s been decimated. A CEO can’t run a company by themselves so either workers Union up or complain.
CEOs and admin and athletes are negotiating with the same people. The owner or owners. Whether the owner is any number of shareholders or a single owner as most sports teams are organized. Each entity whether it’s the BoD or CEO or middle manager is exercising authority granted to them by the owner(s) via the structure of the organization. That’s how organizations works. The shareholder elects the BoD, the BoD selects the CEO, the CEO then hires and structures the organization below him based on whatever strategy he presented to the board. But make no mistake any and all Authority is passed down from owners. The whole management Vs labor is an emotional argument. As far as teachers it’s not much different. Instead of shareholders they answer to constituents. Those constituents vote for city and county officials. Those city and county officials draft legislation or enter contracts to pay teachers. You can argue for or against higher teacher pay, but that argument is whether the local constituents want to raise Their taxes and pay their Teachers more. If the local constituents would rather get taxes and build a new $2b stadium for their local team Vs paying their teachers more that’s up to them. But meh on the outrage about a ceo pay vs worker but hypothetical silence when some athlete makes 20,000,000 while the worker at the stadium makes 40,000
So be mad at owners instead of CEOs? I think in sports people definitely are, people complain way more about the owners than the flacks they hire to run the business side of a team. A lot of people probably dont even know who the CEO is of their favorite team. Anyways, I think you are making too much of this, because one of the reasons people dont complain as much about athletes or actors is that they do things people like, CEOs are essentially useless vultures concerned with shareholder value and do shitty things like layoff people to increase that, but even then lots of high-earning CEOs are valorized as much as celebrities like Steve Jobs or Elon.

Ok, I think you are kind of inventing a person to get mad about. I think some athletes are paid outrageous money, (but the majority of pro-athletes across all sports make closer to what middle class people make than the top players in the most popular sports) but its more upsetting to me that the owners layoff staff when they are raking in millions themselves, all because of this "fiduciary" obligation, just as it pisses me off when Ron DeSantis signs legislation that exempts minor league baseball owners from paying minimum wage.
Right. Sports franchise owners are some of the richest SOBs in the world. If they were overpaying players, they wouldn't be rich, they'd be bankrupt. But at the end of the day, a guy is getting paid $40 million a year to dribble a basketball. He has a skill very few have and therefore the free market has determined that is his annual value....and the owners still make more.
