don't recall discussing this one. the list of critical infrastructure is long and will include most developed areas within Florida. lots of ag land in the path of development is purchased by patient foreign money. not sure how this is going to impact the market

this feels targeted to benefit someone but not sure

Yep. We had a Zoom call with NAR where they went over all of this. They emphasized that we are not to be armchair lawyers. Most likely every realtor will have every buyer sign the affidavit regardless of their birth place.

Miami Herald calling out the halt in the FAU hiring process after the crony was left off of the list of finalists. Will desi go after the Herald now?

‘Hidden agenda’: Miami Herald suggests DeSantis crippled hiring for Florida uni president because he wants unqualified crony in the job (msn.com)

The board wrote that the university had whittled its search down to three finalists, all with impressive resumes.

“No anti-woke warriors, no political allies of Gov. Ron DeSantis, no firebrands who have built a reputation rallying against “liberal” college professor,” it wrote.

It added: “More important, one name was missing from the final list: State Rep. Randy Fine, who has no higher education administration experience, but plenty targeting drag-queen shows and threatening state funding for local governments in his Central Florida district in retaliation for offending him. Fine said in March that DeSantis’ office encouraged him to apply for the FAU position.”

Murdoch is jumping off the train...

Ron DeSantis Is Now Facing the Unthinkable (msn.com)

A new report says that the Murdochs are now starting to sour on DeSantis.

“The conservative media kingmakers' preferred candidate to knock off Donald Trump is not meeting expectations, and the family's patriarch is getting tired of waiting,” a new story in Rolling Stone says, citing multiple sources within the Murdoch companies.

Rupert Murdoch, in discussions reported on by the magazine, has expressed doubts about DeSantis, especially since the Florida governor began formally running for president. He has specifically referenced DeSantis’ “awkward” behavior in public, and the failures so far of his “attempts to connect with the American voter.”

“ understandable worry is that we may end up being stuck with Trump anyway,” a source with Fox News said in the story. “And DeSantis is underperforming. Anybody can see that…, they’re seeing it, too.”

    3% annually across the country

Inflation is plummeting across America except in Ron DeSantis’ Florida (msn.com)

Marketwatch notes that “the rate of inflation in the Tampa Bay region was the highest in the country. Prices rose an estimated 7.3% from June 2022 to June 2023, well above the 3% rate for the nation as a whole.

Last month as well, inflation was huge across much of Florida.

“Residents in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area saw prices shoot up 9% in May compared with a year earlier. By comparison, nationwide inflation for the same period was less than half that rate, with prices rising 4% in May compared with a year earlier,”CBS News reported on Tuesday. “People living in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area have it slightly easier, with inflation rising at a 7.3% annual pace, but that’s still much higher than the U.S. as a whole.”

I'm curious if any DeSantis defenders and supporters on this board can defend what is happening at FAU. Anyone?

Neither supporter nor defender but I can. It all depends on how you define the role of the University President. If the primary role of the University President is to preserve public funds from state government, which is an arguable proposition, much better to appoint a politician than an academic. FAU would not be the first.

Of course, Randy Fine is an especially stupid, craven elected official. At least our university is headed by an individual with some connection to higher education who fancies himself to be a pseudo-intellectual. So that is slightly better for optics' sake.

Now mind you, the motivation behind trying to push Fine is not to help FAU. First, it's to financially remunerate Fine. That is by far the primary goal. It's a solid salary while he can still play politics and pretend to have a job as a cover. Second, it's about bringing the University system under the thumb, preventing the pursuit of truth other than received wisdom, such as it is. They are pretty open about it.

But still, if I were making a decision on behalf of FAU, I might think about putting a political hack in the position that can solicit funds. It's a Faustian bargain, to be sure, but it might be the least bad option. If you did try to operate the university as a straight up institution of higher learning, your efforts will just get beat down anyway. You can't fly under the radar - they are monitoring all. I'm surprised they were able to recruit qualified candidates, which will get harder and harder. Why would a truly qualified candidate that values higher education want to head up an institution in Florida these days?

Interesting. Unlike the Kochs, Murdoch doesn't plant false stories like this for reputation polishing. That said, he will come around if he has to

According to Rolling Stone, Rupert Murdoch is wavering in his support for Ron DeSantis:

In recent weeks, the Murdochs have grown increasingly displeased with the DeSantis campaign’s perceived stumbles, lackluster polling, and inability to swiftly dethrone Trump....According to two of the sources, Murdoch has privately winced at DeSantis’ nonstop cultural-grievance strategy, arguing that it is being executed sloppily.

Let me get this straight. Murdoch isn't especially concerned about DeSantis's ceaseless and repellent pandering to haters and the ignorant. He's only concerned that DeSantis isn't doing it very well.

    Good to clear that up.

As to your last sentence as it applies to fau, id say living in Boca , working at a campus that is a stones throw to the beach with great restaurants nearby would offset a lot of political BS, especially if you are nearing the end of your career.

Not surprised. Desantis completely sucks and is the worst governor in Florida’s history (which is saying a lot). Florida is the only state that likes him for reasons I have no idea why, and I called it as soon as he announced that he would tank and may not even make it to the primaries. He’s a socially awkward, vindictive wannabe authoritarian who can’t handle the slightest bit of criticism. He’s a complete and total loser of a man.
