D-I proposal would shrink portal window by half The NCAA Division I Council proposed changes to the transfer period windows that would reduce the total number of days that student athletes can enter the transfer portal from 60 down to 30.
People keep pointing to the portal, that only makes the process easier. The problems are first and foremost the change to the free one time transfer without having to sit out, NIL meaning kids have more incentive to move if they aren’t maximizing their playing time while schools have more monetary tools to lure them, and a culture that continues to penalize patience and loyalty. They could make the window 7 days, it wouldn’t change any of that stuff.
Make the window 5 days, you have to be in and out in that time period, make it an event, 24 hour converge of wining and dining.
I cannot see the Supreme Court ever allowing anything that restricts “student athletes’ rights.” They will win the argument every time that they had opportunities taken away by rich white men in board rooms. Once the NCAA puts something out there it cannot be taken back.
One time transfer would be ok. Anything more than one time and you should have to sit out a year. Just my opinion.
And the onus shouldn’t be on the school to decide. It makes the school look bad if they must make the decision to make a kid sit or not.
Eliminating Fr eligibility (or 36 credit hrs C or better) and no unrestricted transfers until Jr season would help calm the turbulence. Never happen, however.
I'd be happy if the just restricted freshman from transferring until they sign and stay with that first team for one full year. That's where I think a ton of the fraud by other coaching staffs come into play... with their "offers" to change schools for money, more if it.
