The Gainesville shooting incident was not a murder. I may have missed it, but don't believe anyone implied that Meyer got Hernandez off. The case was closed in 2017 with no charges made, due to a lack of evidence.

Can't we just admit that every college football dynasty over the last 40 years has some shady behavior tied to it.

I would say our run in the 90s was the exception because Spurrier was so innovative.

But every championship in the state of Florida (Florida, FSU, Miami) with the exception of the one tied to Spurrier, had controversy tied to it. Bama was built by Saban with shady tactics. Georgia has been built by Smart with shady tactics.

I think it's really simple, to build a sustainable dynasty in college football over the last 40 years you really need one of the following:
1. Cheat (have a competitive advantage by doing things nobody else is doing)
2. Be different while simultaneously being great.
3. Luck into generational QB after generational QB (if you want to lump Clemson into that group).

 

Davis first- I should have said nothing in my post was directed at you- one of the most intelligent, logical, and reasoned poster on these boards.

But a lot of people said this on message boards and even implied it on GC.
What prompted it was the Mass police looking into the local shooting as they were building a case up there.
That prompted all sorts of internet speculation and accusations.

It didn't help that Meyer was so hated, our program out of control, and Hernandez was clearly off the rails in Boston. (So people said he was also like this in G-ville.)
So it wasn't difficult to travel from those 3 data points to Meyer getting AH off.
People don't need much to make leaps- as I'm sure you know.

And yes the "Hawaiian looking" ID didn't help.

 

Sadly, someone innocent will need to die before anything happens with the good 'ol boys in Athens. And it's the money from the civil suit that shows a pattern of neglect that will do it.

 

Wait . . . did that not already happen?

In August, I guess the special on Meyers years as a Gator coach will be brought back to the surface- lest we forget. He wanted to win pretty badly. He was a great coach and was willing to do anything to get to the top. I'm hoping the damage done by the real bad seeds like Hernandez happened after they left campus. Then again, we've had our share of bad seeds here too. I prefer to stay in a state of denial around that...

For some of us older Gators, we saw the landscape change over the years. The thug element creeped its way into the game ( my recollection is the 80's) and it slowly manifested itself over the years. The system fed the beasts and it continued to swell to its current state. And now NIL, free agency. Fortunately, we're now seeing kids that are coming to Florida that are top students, some others...not so much. But there are some great families out there doing it right. It's good to see.

I love the game, but are guys like Napier going to be able to survive? I sure hope so! He's truly a refreshing change and if he can continue to recruit, eventually we'll have the players to make it all happen. I would imagine if you were a kid and a parent you would want your kid at Florida. Besides coaching, some kids really need guidance and help putting it all together.

I hope we can land a few more of the prize recruits. We absolutely need to do that. I hope the kids (families) can see the value and come to the good guys. I hope they come and help bring the Gators back to prominence; Lord willing and the creeks don't rise...

I’ve been wondering about tgat special too. They have so many options of where to go with it. Hopefully they do a well rounded job and show the good with the bad for what college football really is. Tebow while being a great guy was kinda ostracized in a way because of his polarizing Christianity and the circus that followed him. He became a distraction in a way.
I wonder if they will have the Leon Orr interview where he said the entire team was being paid? To me, it was during the time that was paving the way for nil and open payments to kids.
The Urbs era is kind of a microcosm of where all college football was headed, kind of a precursor.
I don’t think the admins at Florida supported it nor liked tge direction which lead to Urbs taking his act to osu where it was supported.
Do they focus on any of that or just do a hit piece? Tge hit piece will sell so I know what I expect.

 

Its already happened. Devin Willock wasn't even at the wheel of the car when he was killed. A UGA employee was.

 

I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing happened except for a few angry bloggers and assorted personalities ranting for a time. The University of Georgia looks the other way, the last few years have shown the State of Georgia to be obviously corrupt, the NCAA has fewer teeth than a UT fan, and the federal government is pay to play, so where is “justice” going to come from? As long as the Bulldogs keep winning, there’s plenty of rug space to sweep things under.

 

Pretty obvious, anyone who denies it simply isn’t living in reality.

Of course it came from the Georgia Athletic Association rather than from the University as a whole. We all know the tail wags the dog at that place.

 

Keep in mind one fact here. Georgia football is really the only form of decent entertainment in sports outside of the Braves and it has no equal at the collegiate level (seriously, Georgia Tech is the equivalent of UAB). You know the Dawgs have preferential treatment all the way up into the state's Congress. Our Gators don't get that because we share the limelight with 7 or 8 other franchises/colleges.

 

No, I'm saying just the opposite. We don't have a sarcasm emoji here. lol

 

Immediate results at the expense of your other players and your reputation. Not a good idea.
