It’s possible someone didn’t realize they had it, discovered it while in the WH, and decided to ditch it. I once carried a decent amount of pot into DOJ going to an event with John Ashcroft. Didn’t realize it until I got home. It freaked me out a bit so I decided to relax with some pot.

Ha, I once threw away several boxes of Cuban cigars in a Mexican airport because I was too dumb to re-package them and there were tons of drug dogs walking around that made me nervous. I later felt really stupid for thinking the dogs were going to alert on me, but I was only 18 and really paranoid.

Similar paranoid experience coming off a cruise ship circa 1998. Felt like the main character in Midnight Express for a few long minutes in line while Customs was looking through bags. I risked it and kept the cigars, though.

Nice work. If only the movie Blow had come out sooner, I might have known how to take my mind somewhere else while going through security.

I agree, alc is in a league of its own. & if you think that’s cuz it’s legal, research when it wasn’t. Prob woulda never had crack if coke was not made illegal

Generally I think prosecuting end users is a big waste of time and that rehabilitation is the real answer, but by that same token, would you be okay with legalizing opioids?

I’ve always thought the same when patients test positive, drug fairies dusting people up with Coke.

That is true. However, the cocaine was discovered in the West Wing (I have not read where in the West Wing exactly), so that narrows it down considerably. Also we are talking about some of the most surveilled office spaces on the planet. As far as I know, only the living spaces and bathrooms are not under continuous monitoring. If it was Joe Schmo or a White House employee, then they will have that person dead to rights, and we will all know who it was. If it was someone else, then, well, the footage will be damaged, the cameras were not working, or something like that.

They have visitor logs for entering the WH so they know everyone who was in the WH before the drugs were found. They would also know which of those visitors went through the security checkpoints and who were allowed to bypass them.

Can we all agree this is a bad deal? I don't care who left it, but we need to know and if we can't get to the bottom of that then we are in a whole lot sadder shape then we can imagine. This is the WH, the most secure place on the planet and a white powdery substance just happens to show up? Could be a terrorist doing a check on response, could be Hunter, could be some dumbass tourist that realized it and dropped it, but don't we need to get to the answer? How can we not get to the answer? The security footage, the logbooks, fingerprints on bag, DNA on bag, this should actually be somewhat easy to narrow the suspect pool down to just a handful. This also shouldn't take months and maybe not even weeks to figure it out, unless of course the culprit is politically connected then we will never know.

If it had been a poison, no doubt all hands would be on deck. Now that they tested it and it was cocaine, I doubt they're going to put the same amount of resources into it unless it being there is alone evidence of a security breach. I wonder how they do check for something like anthrax? Are there dogs that can smell it from a safe distance, for example? Can any machines detect it? If so, maybe they focus on things like that and smuggling drugs into the White House isn't that hard? I have no idea, but this story just broke, and I doubt secret service is going to publish lots of details about how they handle real threats.
