Former Gators running back Mark Thompson named USFL offensive player of year

Man, I must be getting old because I don’t remember Mark Thompson RB from Florida.

 

That stretch from the end of the Muschamp era through the McElwain years is utterly forgettable. It all kind of fades into an indistinguishable mass of mediocrity.

I remember him well. Had high hopes for him. Bruising type of runner who struggled with ball security if I recall. I could be mixing them up because we had three at the time that we thought would do well. From memory bit I want to say #22?

He was built like the pure RB one would want, about 6-2 230 and had real speed. He had one great game vs Iowa in Outback Bowl. He never seemed to get traction at UF, likely due to moron coaches we had. I do not recall fumblitis disease, but I may be wrong.

 

Just another running back that was under utilized during that era.

 

I think he split carries with another RB. Either way, he wasn't a star for us.

 

Perine, Davis, Scarlett and Thompson were on roster together in 2017. Running back by committee for a few years while he was here until Scarlett and Perine separated themselves and Davis was hurt.

 

I just remember that 85 yard TD run he had in his last game (the Iowa bowl game) and thinking "where has this been all year?"

 

Hopefully he can turn his success into a NFL roster spot.

Fumble issues were overblown. Didn’t get the playing time he should have got

 

He was a monster with huge potential but liked to cough it up. Another player ruined by crap coaching
