I just don’t have a problem with it. We all aren’t alike and shouldn’t be made to live or be like someone else.

For the first time ever I live in a gated 55 and over community. Wow it’s quiet without all the traffic, solicitors, and whining children. It’s like me and the wife went on a permanent vacation from the human race.

I just hung mine up for tomorrow. Tried to post pictures but the photos are too large. Haven't figured that one out yet.

I'm happy to fly the flag. We live in a great country. Not going to let them steal the USA from us anymore than they try to steal Jesus and make him into an proponent of hate.

We still live in a great country, at least so long as we can keep them from exercising too much power and imposing their distinctly unconstitutional and Un-American view of nationhood

Yes it's petty for the HOA to promulgate a rule like that, obviously trying to send a signal to attract people who hate Americans as much as they do. It's distinctly Un-American in it's vision.

But I'm not going to let them take patriotism and redefine it into its opposite, any more than they can take Christianity and redefine it into his opposite

I dunno and didn't like the gif, so I changed it. To your point, though - it's exactly the reason I find the policy flawed.

Meh. I agree that forcing someone to show how free they are is an unsolvable paradox, but real freedom I suppose also requires letting absurd people pursue their own happiness.

It’s not gov so also not a technical issue.

I agree with previous posters that it is almost 100% certain that more Freedom Restrictions are in the future. But also agree that these people are signing up for their day in the barrel.

I hope they find what they’re looking for, and never find me.

Funny anecdotal story albeit almost 20 years old. The president of our HOA was a Republican activist. When his wife ran for the Fairfax County (VA) Board of Supervisors he proudly displayed yard signs promoting her candidacy. When some of us displayed yard signs promoting the candidacy of John Kerry around a year later he didn't hesitate to let us know that under the bylaws of the association the only acceptable yard signs were real estate signs advertising the property all other signs were expressly prohibited, a prime illustration of Republican ethics.

While I feel like this in of itself is probably nothing more than a harmless promotion of patriotism, I think it sets a bad precedent going forward. In general, I dislike HOAs due to overreach and nepotism. They’re great when they stay in their lane, but something like this just sends a wrong message. What’s next? Crane flying Confederate flag over a neighborhood?

Generally speaking, I’m surprised it’s not against the law in North Carolina for HOAs to compel homeowners to make political statements. I love the flag we have, but I want people to know we put it there on our own volition. Not because somebody told us we had to.

I love the fact that I am the only homeowner I know of in our subdivision who is not a member of the HOA. When I built my house in 1983 I had a small custom home building business. I bought the first lot in the subdivision and there were no deed restrictions on the lot. The HOA was formed after I purchased my lot, for the first couple of years they tried to force me into accepting the deed restrictions that would require HOA membership and I refused. My logic was why sign something that would put restrictions on what I could do if I didn't have to.

Sounds like they were attempting to rip you off. Extracting dues from you and forcing you to keep your home in conformity, so that you could help prop up their home values. I think a very basic non-invasive HOA is probably a good idea for a lot of neighborhoods, as they do tend to help home values. But if I was in your shoes, I would have laughed at them.

You must live in some kind of time warp. Those TV shows ended decades ago.

Doesn’t “have a problem with it”, as in no prob being forced to fly a flag. But in next sentence claims to have a problem with it.

There are plenty of HOAs that have far more ridiculous rules than forced flag flying.
Things like certain paint colors, certain fence types, how bright security lights can be to types of pets.

It’s hardly causing the rest of neighborhoods to join in the silliness.

Thanks. But "The Naked Spur" is shown now and then on TCM (like this coming Thursday). That and "Winchester 73," also shown now and then, are the only two Westerns I need. Maybe the best two ever made.

I thought like minded individuals have the right of assembly? Here you are going in knowing up front what is expected by the HOA. No different than any other HOA that has rules that govern the community.

Every HOA has rules and regulations that you know up front before buying into the community. As the president of my small HOA, you would not be surprised by the number of people who don't even bother to read these rules and regs before buying, then complain when they are enforced.
