Four years ago, it was bar fights, minor traffic violations and possession of marijuana. Then it was habitual speeding and reckless driving by players, peaking with a street race that resulted in the death of two people in January. Now it’s 11 cases of football players remaining with the team after women reported violent encounters with them and UGA football siding with an accused player over an alleged victim who worked for the program. Those are the latest revelations from the AJC’s deep and detailed reporting on problems in and around UGA football. At the same time those issues are increasing, Kirby Smart’s accountability is decreasing. Four years ago, the Bulldogs coach blamed himself for the string of arrests by his players. Now Smart says nothing about his own culpability. He offers no transparency about internal discipline, which hasn’t include much missed game time by players and clearly isn’t working. Smart, the state’s highest-paid public employee, seems annoyed that anyone would expect him to give details about the steps he’s taking to get his program under control. Athletic director Josh Brooks nods along in agreement. It seems that no else in power at UGA is going to hold Smart accountable for failing to do an important part of his job. As problems mount, Smart escapes accountability (ajc.com) The AJC is not pulling any punches.
Because they're winning. Winning is ALL that matters in some places. As usual, if anyone has trouble reading the article, send me a PM.
It’s true that most don’t read much and only believe what they want to believe. Accusations of that sort shouldn’t be made unless the ones making them are willing to stand up and back up what they are saying with the best facts they can bring. Making accusations and running and hiding is pretty bad.
You make a great point in this post, but unless these are all false accusations this is hardly a “meh” discussion. Eleven players accused of sexual abuse and no charges, or even suspensions?? This is worse than that criminal operation in Tallahassee. And I didn’t know that was even possible
Yeah that's the usual first move for someone who's ox has been gored. That being said the poster is correct about the state of what passes for journalism in this country right now. I think there is a colorful term for it: Yellow.
I did stupid crap I regret in college as well. In cars, in bars, wrong place, women in similar drunken state, …. We’re not the video recordings they have today. Not condoning alleged sexual assaults but give kids the benefit of the doubt the first time.
If I were a victim of one of UGA's thug football players I would sue not just the person in question but the university for hiring a coach that willfully ignored the growing amount of crime being committed by his players, and for creating an environment that protects his players against their crimes from the public eye. I would sue the AD for doing nothing about the rampant crime that he personally knew... that was coming from his football team/player/program, and he did nothing to curb nor address it in a preventative way with a positive outcome. The coach and the university too are to blame. The "smoking gun" for their part in the next crime committed by one of Kirby's thugs is easy to prove that the school... the AD... the coach are the fact that these football players, that have committed these crimes in the past, are still on the team, and that proves inaction or the lack of institutional control by the university... the AD... the coach. It proves that they were not serious enough to prevent nor even slow down the lawlessness on their own football team. Kirby already took blame for the crimes committed by his players, so now his own words can be used against him in a court of law. He and others aforementioned at that university are accountable...
As someone who works with students on a weekly basis… I can tell you this is not just a problem at Georgia, or with athletes… This is a problem for females on campus all over the country. I hear horror story after horror story of sexual abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and very little done about it… And a very “boys will be boys” “how much did you have to drink and what were you wearing attitude”. I’d hope that if this happened with our football team, they’d be kicked off. Smart and admin should be held accountable
I don't work with students, but I've seen them while driving by the UF campus. And one thing that stands out to me in your post is "what were you wearing." As someone who attended UF more than half a century ago, I honestly have to say it's amazing to see how female students dress today. It's the difference between night and day, to the best of my memory back when I was in school such apparel would be scandalous. Maybe I'm just an old fogey way behind the times, but I can't help but think that the way students dress today may be in some part related to what you call "a problem for females on campus all over the country."
Hey @ETGator, do you know why the steve person's post was deleted? I didn't see anything trollish, just a dissenting opinion. Are we not welcoming rival posters these days?
That is what the young lady that was a victim of Winston's crimes did.....She got a sizable settlement, but no admission of wrongdoing.
Interesting that our traditional two biggest rivals are both scum from the bottom of the bucket. Other than that Sandusky mess, nobody else comes close to rivaling ref$u and uga. How can we be so lucky
I remember a physics professor saying much the same in the early 70s. I didn't understand the distraction he had and just let the comment pass. Perhaps older eye see things much differently.
Hey the 70s were the best. I always appreciated the No-bra look. Forget physics, we’re talking dynamics!
