Rough for the families that need the help. They already have enough going on, no need to pull the rug out from under them like this.

Florida takes sick kids off Medicaid months before it said it would

Florida purged about 300,000 residents from its Medicaid rolls in April and May, after the end of a COVID-era policy that banned states from dropping people from the program for low-income children, families and young adults. Charlotte wasn’t expected to be one of them.

Charlotte meets the American Academy of Pediatrics’ definition of medically complex. The Department of Children and Families published a plan earlier this year vowing to postpone Medicaid redeterminations for medically complex kids under 21 until the end of the Medicaid unwinding in Spring 2024. But that isn’t what happened, according to some providers and advocates.

“You never want a child’s coverage to be interrupted. But for these kids and their families, it’s catastrophic,” said Miriam Harmatz, founder and director of advocacy for the Florida Health Justice Project. “Kids who have multiple comorbidities or serious life-threatening illnesses like Charlotte’s cystic fibrosis … they cannot go without coverage.”

Medicaid paid for all expenses related to Charlotte’s specialty medical daycare, breathing machine and medications that helped her gain weight, get energy, protect her immune system and help her lungs function.

Thanks for posting this. I saw it but was too discouraged to post. I'm not sure what will be of much interest either. Just try to fight despair sometimes

I saw it and it's sad but, "pro life" conservatives only care about the womb

Listen, it’s high time these children took a little personal responsibility for not being born into upper middle class homes. This is a perfect opportunity to teach them life’s little lessons. The ones who survive to adulthood may even become Republicans. Eventually.

These kids need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and find a good paying job with benefits so that they don't have to rely on the government

Reminds me of a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1984 in which the speaker (either Ted Kennedy or Mario Cuomo) said (paraphrasing) "to a lot of Republicans the right to life begins at conception and ends at birth".

Big insurance's best friend. This is why those politicians beholden to the money bundlers are nothing more than grifters for special interest. And still DeSantis lets the insurance companies run amuck in Florida.

Is this something “big insurance” would have wanted? Not sure I understand, these kids are just losing Medicaid, it’s not like some other insurance profits from kids losing coverage..

I would assume they do this just because cruelty is what evil people do. Kind of like the stunts with immigrants. There truly is no point, other than the twisted performative aspect.
