Some people are just bad test takers. They overthink, they stress, they run out of time. You name it.

I was actually the opposite. I was a fairly average student but a really good test taker.

It is a slippery slope when it comes to granting admission due to lower income levels. I'm good with giving the poorer student the nod over the rich kid if everything else is equal (test scores, grades). But if you begin lowering standards to allow in more lower income, that's essentially affirmative action based on income instead of race. It waters down the talent pool. But the biggest issue with any sort of affirmative action based on race or income is that removes incentive for parents to get their shit together and make sure their child gets a solid education. That's what Asian-Americans are doing. It's part of their culture. Education is not an option, it's a way of life. Until that happens, there will always be a gripe about the so-called "disadvantages" minorities (magically not Asians somehow) and low-income families have in everything, not just getting accepted into UF.

Ultimately, there is nothing better than a test that puts a person on the spot where they have to remember something they learned and that is important to the study and grades them on it. The ability to recall important information is a fundamental necessity of almost any profession. There's nothing else that displays this ability better than a test.

I think you have more faith that they are trying to be fair than I do. They are just trying to preserve a exclusive path

Many take the SAT multiple times. I get it. It's easy to have an off day and do shitty on the SAT. I took it 3 times, mainly because my first take I felt the testing administrator made it extremely disorganized and I was distracted by that and just sort of half-assed my way through it once I realized nothing I thought about it was going to change things. 2nd take was my best score. Took it a 3rd time just to see if I could do better, but scored slightly less. Both were much higher than my 1st take though.

You cannot affirmatively admit someone Based on race without simultaneously discriminating against someone else based on race.

To be fair, I'm not sure how much the grades in pre-med and med school are based on formal tests as opposed to attendance, take home assignments, labs, etc. I guess I'm assuming that tests are a big part of the final grades, but I could be wrong there.

Isnt this like saying it was the other persons spot? That's not how it works, and a pretty entitled or just weird way to think about it.

I assume they could consider overcoming learning disabilities as a positive factor?

I get your overall points. But there are lots of hidden advantages for kids who grow up with educated or financially well off family. Not only formal tutoring options but parents helping with assignments. Kids being taken on trips and learning about things they will study in class. A kid who grows up with money may have more time to volunteer if they're not having to earn a paycheck, etc.

It’s saying “ all else being equal you cannot admit someone based on race without discriminating based on race”. The vagueness is the all else being equal.

In Florida, doctors must pass all four tests of the USMLE, which are probably the hardest tests a person could ever take. So not being a good test taker probably doesn't end well for most medical students, thus I would tend to agree with you test scores are going to be closely scrutinized upon admission to most respectable medical schools.

Ok, can you explain how this works in practice? If I date a white girl, my preference isnt really discriminating against another non-white girl I could be dating instead, that's not really how anyone normal views something like that.

I believe affirmative action was absolutely critical and necessary for the growth of our country and all of its citizens. However, at what point does the affirmative action come to an end? It cannot be perpetuated indefinitely.

I’m split on my thoughts on the decision, legally and politically. It’ll take me some time to digest it.

That is the primary question that all supporters of equity-based initiatives need to ask themselves.

Just remember all, without the great President Donald J. Trump, this SCOTUS decision would not have happened.

In terms of racial justice, it ended in 1978 after Bakke, the last 40 years have basically been an effort to mirror some sort of idea of demographic diversity

Are you dating the white girl because she is white? If not, then it isn’t a good analogy.

Well there are plenty of white girls I wouldn't date, that's why this a weird way to look at something. Is your assumption that Harvard is only taking someone only because they are black? Because they turn down plenty of black people too. Anyways, you can forget the analogy, can you just explain how what you are saying works in practice?
