I am guessing that a fair number of folks on Nuttin' But Net played competitive hoops at some level. So if you did who was your role model? I am going to be modest and honest. My role model was Paul Silas from the Celtics. He was an undersized rebounding machine that had great technique, great desire and an unbelievable understanding of where the ball was going and where everybody else was. He was Dennis Rodman without the tats and piercings and wanting media attention. For some reason I could also hit outside shots if open so not exactly perfect role model.
My nickname was Baby Shaq. When I learned how to pass and shoot (about age 22), it gradually shifted to Baby Bird. Then I got old and couldn't play at that level anymore. Now I don't have a nickname, I'm just that old guy that tells stories about the glory years The old Broward courts had some amazing ball being played on them.
I was a Bobby Dandrige fan, from his time with the Bucs. Good all around player, rebounded & defended , but could score when needed. I didn’t really have an offensive game until after high school. Just rebounded, played defense and lived off put-backs. Found my offensive game at the Old Alligator Alley, playing pick-up.
I went to every home playoff game the year the Bullets won the NBA title. Dandridge out played Dr. J in the Philly series. About when were you playing pick up games at alligator alley? I started playing pick up games there in the early part of 1972.
My budding hoops career ended at approximately grade five. I was short, not particularly fast or athletic, and was always open because nobody cared enough to guard me. For some reason, my teammates still didn't pass me the ball. Basically just the opposite of Kobe Bryant, so my nickname should have been White Weasel.
I’m jealous. Only saw them on the tube. Didn’t Phil Chanier (?) play on that team also? Agreed, Bobby D played well, matched up with Julius & that was good TV. I started playing pick up in the Alley around Winter of 1980. Got to UF Fall of ‘79 but arrived on a bum foot.
Elgin Hayes, Unseld, Chenier, Dandridge, Kupchak, Larry Wright, Kevin Grevey, Tom Henderson. It was a nightmare, getting in and out of the arena parking lot, but it was worth it.
I modelled MJ. Mimicked his stroke, complete with low angle. Really got horizontal on drives. Loved reverse layups. Loved to play sagging D and jump passing lanes. . Of course, I was barely 6'2" and had maybe a 26" vert. Nobody else thought I looked like Mike. But I sure as hell thought I did. lol
Da Meat Hook! Look him up youngsters. I waddled down the court about the same. I had a 2 inch vertical, on a good day. Shot a set jumper without the jump. The few times I shot a free throw is was a prayer at best. I enjoyed moving bodies around on the inside and setting picks. But man could I shoot the over the shoulder hook shot from inside on one foot. I guess in reality the only thing we had in common was the number 33.
As a kid, I often did the Pistol Pete drills to help my skills. His skill level was other-worldly, but it did not come without a LOT of hard work.
I modeled MJ for my mid range game but my style of play was more like Grant Hill and/ or Larry Johnson.
