I’m pretty sure this is something everyone expected to happen, but even with getting the required number of signatures, getting past the MAGA Attorney General and the Republican Florida Supreme Court is going to be a challenge.

“A coalition in Florida launched an effort Monday to get a question on the ballot in the 2024 general election that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

The group, Floridians Protecting Freedom, is proposing asking voters if they support a constitutional amendment that would allow a woman to have an abortion up to when the fetus can survive outside the womb, typically between 24 weeks' and 28 weeks' gestation.”

I would have preferred that the drafters of this amendment had specified the number of weeks and stated the starting date for the calculation. Normally for this purpose they start counting on the first day of the last known menstrual period, which makes Florida's six week ban even more absurd. I know people WAY more versed in constitutional law and amending state constitutions than I drafted this proposal, but I'm afraid "viability" is going to be seen as an ambiguity. My suggestion would hopefully remove any potential ambiguity.

This will set a record for how quickly it gets the required number of signatures to get on the on the ballot. One could not pick a better proposed amendment to put on the 2024 general ballot than this to drive voter turn out.

I have little doubt that will pass due to the deeply and widely held conviction that we hate women if we make it hard for them to kill their offspring.

Yep, the Republican legislature is skilled and experienced in circumventing the expressed will of the people. It may get the signatures, it may pass court review, and it may get an overwhelming percentage of votes but it will not be allowed to go into effect.

Yeah ... assuming this gets a vote and passes, I'm sure they'll come up with something like "it only applies to animals since humans were not specifically mentioned"...

I think a reasonable compromise is 24 weeks. Think the majority of the US would be good with that.

That’s way more liberal than liberal Europe, most countries restricting baby-killing to 12 weeks.

Interesting, you seem to know quite a bit about this subject, but twelve weeks sounds like a pretty long baby killing season. I have family members who hunt deer, and they usually bait an area with corn or carrots. What does one use to bait for babies?

I think that is reasonable for the typical elective abortion. I would extend it only for mother's health at significant risk or terminal issue with the fetus.

Full agreement there. I think that gets rid of late term abortions and is actually the will of a majority of the US.

So, we are moving away from Pro Choice of a woman to the right of a woman to abort up to a certain date? Because Prochoice would mean unfettered access right up and including when their water breaks. So, in reality this is not a woman's issue?

Why does it not surprise me that you have family that would bait fields. Quite illegal in many states.

First off it’s a joke. Second it’s allowed in the upper peninsula of Michigan, not the lower. If you’re going to lecture anyone on the laws then it might be helpful for you to know the law first. No reason to embarrass yourself unnecessarily.

I don't see the Florida electorate agreeing to a 24 week free for all pro-choice bill.

I know reading comprehension is not good for you, but I posted in many states, and you even stated that it is illegal in some parts of Michigan. I will say though they must be quite adapt at hunting if they need to bait a field.

Given the choice between 24 weeks and what we currently have, I believe a majority will take the 24 weeks. Pub women want the option as much as Dems.
