DeSantis is going to fulfill all of Trump's unbroken promises, beginning with immigration issues. First, finish building that pesky wall (he at least admits WE will pay for it, and he will spend "every available dollar," on it.) Next up, birthrate citizenship. He thinks Congress and the Courts should look into it again, as everyone has "misinterpreted," the 14th Amendment. Basically, he's lambasting Trump for "hollow rhetoric," while himself making grandiose promises. Ending birthright citizenship has been a big goal for some time. I'm sure we'll see more of efforts like this to test out how many precedents the new Court is willing to overturn.
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” That’s the first sentence in the 14th amendment. To me it seems pretty straight forward, so what is it he says is being misinterpreted and what is it he wants to change?
No idea. Like most politicians, he's long on bloviation, and short on details. If I were to guess, it would be something along the lines of 1. Just because a baby is born in the US, and automatically a citizen, doesn't mean it's illegal parents are, and 2. ending "birthright tourism," or 3. doing away with it all together, in effect rewriting or repealing the 14th Amendment (I think this last is unlikely.)
Keep in mind that DeSantis not unlike Trump is appealing to low information voters. I suspect that a good percentage of his potential voters are completely ignorant regarding the explicit language of the 14th Amendment with respect to citizenship and perhaps even worse they really do not care what it says.
I cannot repeat my thoughts at that attack on the 14th. Ahistorical, amoral and soulless. Darkly racist One positive bright spot, let us consider the intent of the RR Congress like Charles Sumner, John Bingham and my man Thaddeus Stevens. Not that they will.
If the plain language doesn't seem helpful, he can focus on the "original understanding," which is apparently what he's arguing.
On the other hand conservatives believe that the Constitution should be interpreted based on textualism which in simple terms it means what it says.
Yeah, it seems like he's going straight to understanding/intent. DeSantis says he would seek to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants "Dangling the prize of citizenship to the future offspring of illegal immigrants is a major driver of illegal migration. It is also inconsistent with the original understanding of 14th Amendment, and we will force the courts and Congress to finally address this failed policy," he added. "This idea that you can come across the border, two days later have a child, and somehow that’s an American citizen -- that was not the original understanding of the 14th Amendment and so we’ll take action to force a clarification of that," he told reporters at a news conference.

Sweet. The Wall is back 2.0! Now I can once again tell who is absolutely not a fiscal conservative or good with basic math.
Although he has absolutely no chance of winning the Republican nomination Will Hurd is the one Republican presidential candidate who absolutely opposes the wall. He does now and he did when he represented the Congressional district with the longest border with Mexico (820 miles running from just south of San Antonio to El Paso).
I'm pretty surprised he'd resurrect the Wall. It didn't work out well for Trump, who was much more popular than DeSantis. It should have been allowed to remain interred in the political graveyard of Very Bad Ideas. Trump is no doubt going nuts at this brazen appropriation of his issues and ideas.
Immigration was Trump's first distinguishing issue, and DeSantis ran an ad with him (DeSantis) building a toy wall with his daughter. Whether he thinks the wall is a feasible or not is anyone's guess, but I think he knows that immigration is at least one issue that he can't be seen as giving an inch on.
