A woman accused of fatally shooting her Uber driver in Texas after falsely believing she was being driven to Mexico against her will has been charged with murder, authorities said. The family of driver Daniel Piedra Garcia, 52, said he was taken off life support Wednesday,

Phoebe D. Copas, 48, of Tompkinsville, Kentucky, remained in El Paso County jail following her arrest June 16, the day the driver was shot, according to El Paso police and county jail records.

Detectives believe Copas was in El Paso to visit her boyfriend. She was in the backseat of the Uber en route to meet him at a casino when she saw roadway signs stating "Juarez, Mexico," which is across the border from El Paso, according to the affidavit.

Believing she was being kidnapped and taken to Mexico, Copas shot the driver, causing the vehicle, a Nissan Maxima, to strike a highway barrier and come to a stop along U.S. 54 South, police said.

More senseless gun crime, this time by an unhinged idiot who probably consumed media that made her scared of immigrants. RIP to the deceased.

That’s a big leap - ‘I saw a road sign that mentioned Mexico therefor my Uber driver is kidnapping me and I need to fire multiple rounds into the back of his head.’

This is crazy and paranoid in an unfortunate product of our national dialogue. But as opposed to a road sign, I wonder if it was her cellular service. When we were driving just outside of El Paso, I got a T-Mobile text message that said "Welcome to Mexico" even though we were not within 5 miles of the actual border

I would imagine before entering Mexico you’d have to stop at border patrol and show documentation. I’m thinking she wasn’t exactly in a coherent state of mind to realize this.

No doubt. I didn't mean to suggest that it was a reasonable mistake. It just reminded me of when I got that message. But plainly she was paranoid and not rational and potentially bigoted

Did she fly to El Paso with a gun? I just don’t get gun freaks.
