Wagner troops have reportedly halted their advance on Moscow, as Belarusian president Lukashenko has brokered a temporary deal with security assurances for Prigozhin and his forces.

Prigozhin trusting Lukashenko for security. Interesting.

As it plays out, will Prig strike a deal with Putin and say he was fighting the corruption that lied to Putin and cost the lives of soldiers vs a battle to the death. Def History one way or the other.

Totally disagree. This is an opportunity for China to settle a debt even more important to them. If Russia collapses into civil war, then China can retake Outer Manchuria under the guise of keeping the peace and protecting the minority Chinese population there. This they can do without a very risky crossing of the Taiwan Straits.

Even if this really is the end of it, and I’m not convinced it is, Putin comes out of it severely weakened.

This is a take I have not seen as is counterintuitive. But Anne Marie Slaughter retweeted it, FWIW

Ah. Sounds like a respite, but whatever is happening is far from over.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a rash of people accidentally falling out of windows next week

I think whatever legitimate chance Prigozhin had was predicated on it happening very quickly. Prigozhin is a dead man walking. Putin just bought himself some time.

100% agree. If there was a face-saving out of the Ukraine debacle, then this might be it. Good chance to declare victory in Ukraine and get your army back home where you need them. Just get Ukraine to declare legal protections for Russians living inside Ukraine, then you can buy out, call it even, and tell the world that “You showed those Ukes who was boss!”

Supposedly leader of Belarus first talked to Putin, then talked to Wagner, and the result was Wagner decided to turn around. Sounds like they must have cut a deal with him.

That is possibly, even probably, so. But the underlying cracks in the Russian war machine are now on full display. Literally, nothing like this has been seen since the Russian Civil War. That’s no longer deniable in a manner that does not invite violent laughter.
