I'm not even sure Adam Smith would pass muster these days, he wrote about the justness of laws that benefit workers and such. I guarantee I could pick out some passages in the Wealth of Nations that idiots would attribute to Karl Marx or Mao. Like this one for example:

    Or this:

Please understand that Ronnie D had nothing to do with this. The writing of the standards has been ongoing.

Comparative economic systems is part of both the economics and American government curriculum. Has been for years.

Yeah, my parents had to take a capitalism vs communism course in high school. Though I think it was called "Americanism" not capitalism.

Clearly they took the communism side of that, and passed it down to you.

Yes I believe there was a course called Life Management Skills that had that as a unit before the Legislature cut it to make way for another required math class.

Correct, AVC (Americanism v. Communism) morphed into Comparative Political Systems, which then morphed into Economics..

Well, I do remember studying them in both HS and at UF, though I don't recall the specifics or the context. All I remember about econ at UF, was Dr. Dave Denslow (admittedly a proponent of free market capitalism), and being surrounded by a 1,000 gorgeous lasses challenging my attention span...

Which often resulted in red construction paper "A+ Notes" (which were really more like C is for commencement notes).

Nm. Lost my point--just remembering those lasses...

I agree it was in works for years, but RonnyD was all to eager to sign it, and HE, not anyone else, signed it into law.

(And I vaguely remember him talking about it when he was candy...).

Tbl--he gets shit for signing "don't say gay", give the devil his due, when he raises 1st year treacher salaries to $47k, ....and signs into law financial literacy...

Always said he's done some stuff I liked, especially early in his governship. I voted for him vs Gillum. I wouldn't vote for him now. Not with his infatuation with culture war. But no problem giving him credit where due.

Again, writing the standards takes YEARS because everyone and their brother wants input. The only thing that he got right was timing, no more, no less.

Question for you though, who’s been in charge in Tallahassee for the past 20+ years?

Could there have been a worse choice than Gillum. He was such a sleaze I think he would sell out the states interest for a drink.

A lot of the Gillum stuff came out after the fact, I think. Definite bullet dodged though.

There were rumors. Tallahassee city council is a known cesspool.

Perhaps, but what's gonna get squeezed out? It won't likely be Greek mythology. When such policies are made, often school schools are forced to make a black/white decision, i.e. offer it as a stand-alone class and cut something else out of the curriculum. Financial literacy is a great idea, but I'm not generally in favor of the gov dictating curriculum. . . . except when they require music/the arts ;).

Ok - that's good to know. I wonder why rolling it into econ was not deemed sufficient (cue the jokes)? Is career research a class?

It is here in Brevard County. I think that financial literacy is a great idea but I’m not sure that there is enough there to fill up 18 weeks worth of curriculum. As you say, something else will get squeezed out so perhaps rolling it into career research makes sense.

The only other pause I have is the target grade level. 9th graders are feral creatures (you haven’t lived until you’ve been hit with the heady aroma of Axe and BO) and I’m not sure that they can really grasp the concepts. Maybe a senior requirement coupled with how to function as an adult.
