I’ve destroyed two carbon bike frames in wrecks. Most modern racing sailboats have carbon masts that are built to high load specs and need to be meticulously maintained but they fail routinely. No substitute for titanium at depth.

Honestly, this is good news given the circumstances. It means they didn't suffer at all and it was all over in the blink of an eye. Much more palatable than imagining them suffering over 4-5 days, knowing the fate that awaited them...

Well then, by all means, y'all resume your jokes about this if you think it's funny, or making fun of it, helps anyone cope (don't go stopping on my account).

I only speak for myself. I just don't find humor in a genuine human tragedy.

    Just me.

Change the state as the area grows.

I gave you a come on man because uftaipain's post was spot on, and you were too dismissive of it. I take it you were never in a position where death was a constant companion. But you're right about this being a horrible tragedy.

The coast guard typically sends a bill. I remember reading that somewhere.

Why do you say blink of an eye? Would an implosion at that depth cause instant death? However, I imagine they knew something was wrong as they descended, and that parts broke off as they did, so that they were aware of their impending death.

Why would a father take his 19 year old son on such a dangerous mission???

Not a fan. What they did is exceedingly dangerous and stupid. Companies doing shit like this should be forced to waive their right/expectation to a rescue at taxpayer expense.

I doubt they even knew what happened at that pressure.

Implosion - one end pops off - contents shot out - it's over in a millisecond.....

Yeah, that this business (along with Blue Origin and others) even exists is an indictment of a lot of things, particularly billionaires existing

If there was a catastrophic failure they never would have even known. Put it this way, the approximate pressure at depth there is equivalent to having 47 school buses laying on you, and the instant pressurization that would force that air out of you and crush your lungs, not to mention the ship probably instantly crushing to zero.
It would be over in a hundred ways quickly.

There's really no true comedy potential to be mined from this. The fact of the matter is that the news is presented in a manner in which we are dealing with characters and not real people so making memes and posting hot takes like you're watching a poorly scripted streaming show is to be expected. Also the country is just in an overall sour mood. Seeing rich people die in an unconventional way is a bit of a break from the 24/7 depression season we currently live under. Make of that what you will. Not saying it's "right" but I do understand.

People are just too impotent, lazy and apathetic to do anything about the wealthy ourselves, so we rely on their own hubris and mother nature to finish the job while we play edgelords on the Internet.

As for the actual incident, I don't see the problem with going to view the Titanic, if that's what you want to do - but don't do it on the cheap for goodness sake. Capitalism is a disease though and it's only natural that the billionaire would cut corners with even his own life to save a buck or two.

Its illustrative of a lot of things wrong in the world, like 800 migrants might be dead from their boat sinking and we are obsessed with this

Reports are confirming that they located parts of the hull, suggesting (if not confirming) a catastrophic event. They also mentioned that sonar buoys were in place for 72+ hrs and detected no catastrophic activity during that time. With the location of the debris field approx 1600 ft from the bow of the Titanic, which is were such missions would typically approach the vessel, this suggests that it was a relatively short trip and that the hull was compromised = quick/instant loss of life at the early stage of the trip.
