Been a lot of noise on this board about New College, this opinion piece is informative. It was in very bad shape and the states action has svaed it.

Here’s how Ron DeSantis saved New College of Florida from mediocrity | Column
Critics of change at Sarasota’s New College of Florida have read too much into statements by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff and others that they would like to see New College become more like Hillsdale College.
    >
New College stopped being a real honors college some time ago. Its administration and faculty chose, instead, to become a haven for those who embrace the ideology of so-called progressivism. Think about what DeSantis calls “woke” — an emphasis on unconventional pronouns, a dominant LGBTQ+ community, referring to conservatives as fascists, homophobes, transphobes and so on.
    >
The governor’s critics not only know very little about Hillsdale, they seem oblivious to New College’s predicament before the governor got involved. It’s no wonder that the Legislature was ready to close it down in 2020, an outcome only avoided through the intervention of the area’s state senators.

Interim President Corcoran and New College’s trustees looked to Hillsdale because they believe in the classical liberal arts, which most of America’s colleges have abandoned. Pragmatically, they also understand that demand for admission into Hillsdale is at an all-time high while demand for admission to New College in recent years has been at an all-time low. What they are seeking is a balance between a core curriculum and independent study

Sounds like a bunch of Bullshit ... it took me 5 seconds to find the 2022-2023 rankings ... the college was doing fine ... we will have to see if Meatball Ron's plan to kill it off works...

In addition to earning the No. 5 ranking, New College of Florida was also ranked No. 76 for National Liberal Arts Colleges (up six positions from last year, and the highest ranking New College has ever achieved in this category), No. 52 for Social Mobility in National Liberal Arts Colleges (a 15-position increase from last year), and No. 40 for Most Innovative Schools (National Liberal Arts Colleges).

U.S. News & World Report Ranks New College of Florida No. 5 on 'Best Colleges' List - New College of Florida (ncf.edu)

L-O-L. The guy who wrote your op-ed is the same guy who has been working behind the scenes on this right-wing takeover:
The Superyacht Lawyer Claiming He Kicked Off DeSantis’ New College Takeover

I'm sure he thinks he and his allies are doing a fabulous job. Meanwhile, I've spoken with a number of stakeholders (faculty, students, alumni, etc.) who don't feel remotely "saved." But if you define "saving" the institution as turning it into the Hillsdale of the South (a right-wing Christian school), I'm sure you're happy about what's going on too.

If the state was actually interested in making the school a better place, there's plenty they could have done. That wasn't the goal here. The goal here was to use New College as a trial balloon for a right-wing takeover of public universities. DeSantis and his cronies have found that passing legislation has led to successful legal challenges, so why not test out what you can get away with when you place a group of political zealots on the board of trustees and install an ally as president?

If New College was this unbelievably intolerant place full of "wokes," how did the students there manage to get through to a famous white supremacist and cause him to reconsider his beliefs?
How A Rising Star Of White Nationalism Broke Free From The Movement

To be blunt, you need to stop gobbling up whatever bullshit the anti-woke people feed you.

So, a 1978 New College Grad who hates LGBTQ+.

Currently Director of the Freedom Institute of Palm Beach. From their website:

Sounds like he is right out of the DeSantis mold. Already ran for Congress once and lost, clearly writing opinion pieces of dubious "facts" while peppering in right-wing talking points as he positions himself for another run at office.

I am not sure what is in the water down in Palm Beach County?

Never heard of the School, although I'm not surprised since it has a max of 800 students. There are plenty of High Schools that have more students, I'm not sure why the state needs to fund a board of trustees and all the admin just to call another campus in the state university system by another name. If it were up to me, it would be absorbed into one of the public state universities, most likely USF.

Shockingly (lol not really), Desantis actually doubled the salary for the crony he put in charge, compared to the President he removed.

The New College Board of Trustees offers Richard Corcoran a nearly $700,000 salary.

Which is why I don't vote for either political party. Both are corrupt as shit, throwing money at friends and supporters.

It's a complete waste of Florida tax revenue to pay $700k a year to someone that oversees 800 students. High schools principals have just as much or more responsibility and don't get paid nearly as much. Absorb the college into one of the big universities and ditch the bureaucracy.

I know it won't happen, but it's ironic that the right bitches about colleges and universities but still throw money at them when it serves there interests. The true definition of corruption.

Interesting - it was whelped from USF but has had a different type of approach to higher Ed. Most students design their own curriculum with oversight by a mentor-professor. It did not fit well within a traditional university.

The columnist uses “progressive” and “woke” in describing the college. Isn’t that taking a biased viewpoint? we primarily now only hear “woke” from politicians attacking it or attempting to disparage policy they deem as “woke”.

    How about FSU?

There's an existing association through the clown college already. (seriously--Ringling bros. circus deal).

USF is waaayyy too STEM oriented and sciency and respectable, to be burdened with this artsy nitche school.

^^^note, USF just accepted into AAU. FSU has not. :D:p:D

It's a much better fit for FSU.

So your point is well taken, just a different parent school would be more appropriate imho.

It's a useless liberal arts school.

    Those are usually private anyways.

I'd be jim flippn' dandy if they shut the sumbich down, or at least cut it loose, and let it go private.

That's what privates are for. Let them exist off of the federal nickel (student loans) rather than State funds, b/c the ROI just isn't there.

...or as I suggested above, let its -ROI be absorbed by another state school--especially one with an existing relationship (FSU).

I went to a very conservative college (Washington & Lee University - named such because both RE Lee and George Washington were presidents of the school and Lee & his family are buried on campus) and my HS girlfriend and her best friend both attended New College. I went down for a visit (this was in the fall of ‘99) to see them and check it out and I’ll just say it was extreme culture shock to me especially after spending my first few months in Lexington. Extremely liberal is the only way I can describe it. To the point that I was uncomfortable.
