Biden calls Xi a 'dictator,' fueling Chinese anger

My biggest problem with Joe Biden, by far, is his mouth. He is not fit to serve. From his mocking of Chief Justice Roberts in 2009 (had to be told by Obama to shut up), calling Vladimir Putin a murderer as Russia was building up to war with Ukraine and now this. Some like to talk about his "gaffes", but "gaffes" don't cover over stuff like this.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken had been sent to Beijing a day prior to "cool tensions" between China and the US and Biden does this the next day. Not only does he publicly call Xi a 'dictator', but he goes on to mock him about supposedly not knowing about the balloon we shot down in February off the coast of South Carolina. So it wasn't just a rebuke of Xi's human rights record, the comments were meant to embarrass Xi by mocking his lack of control of the Communist party in Beijing.

The usual suspects here will dismiss this as "Biden playing hardball", but when you're on the precipice of potential war (Taiwan), you don't want to say stuff like this as it makes getting to the diplomacy table terribly difficult. As we have seen in Russia, there is little room for diplomacy or negotiation. There's simply nothing to be gained by publicly calling Putin a 'murderer' or Xi a 'dictator.' All that does is alienates them more and pisses them off.

Again, this comes one day after sending his own SoS to Beijing to "cool tensions", so spare me the excuses. This is not something you say a day after sending an envoy to Beijing to repair relations. It also becomes another step in pushing China towards Russia and vice versa. This has nothing to do with Biden's age. He's always been a blustering idiot. From his crime bill to comments like these, he shows how cold and empty he is inside. He's never been (regardless of age) qualified to be POTUS.

Instead of building a bridge over the Indian Ocean Biden should be building a bridge to China.

Kinda shows you could never win with some people. Why do conservatives suddenly care about pissing off China? They've been beating the drum of antagonism for years now, didnt seem to mind calling it the "Wuhan virus" and such.

Should not be a surprise to anyone who actually watched Biden over the years vs. letting the media form your opinion. He’s always been a condescending A-Hole to anyone who at or below his level who didn’t agree with him or wanted his approach to be implemented. But he knew how to kiss higher ups and the media’s asses so they would talk nice about him. He was an empty suit long before his brain stopped functioning entirely.

Xi got rid of the term limits so he can run the country indefinitely as the leader of the only national political party (CCP). Seems like the shoe fits. That said, there's a balance between ignoring those things and engaging in unnecessary provocation. I thought the argument has mostly been that Biden is too soft on China (and Cuba and others).

Imagine living in a country where you weren’t permitted to open your business, send your kids to school, attend a church, comfort your dying or bury your dead.

Oh wait, that was our democracy.

Yup. This hit my news feed last night and I knew this would be the outcome. If Trump said this it would be proof of how tough he is on China, our enemy. But Biden said it, so it's treasonous.

Personally. I'm not happy Biden said it. I would also be unhappy had Trump said it.

While his description of Xi was accurate Biden should have never made the statement. Once again Joe Biden demonstrated that he does share one characteristic with his immediate predecessor, a lack of self-discipline and a tendency to speak impulsively.

I’m not going to disagree with you. But it is ironic that Biden is criticized for being too soft on China and now too hard on China. Also I suspect you didn’t call out Trump on the nasty things he said about China.

Yeah, I think China antagonism is stupid, but many Americans seem to want it, I don't think you can get mad at this if you are in the "we need to get tough on China" crowd. This is basically what you want. Just wait until the election, it will be a pissing contest over who has the bigger swingin' member when it comes to China posturing.

Yep, I haven't given up total hope the media won't start asking tougher questions as this moves long. They roasted him in 1988, but I know it's a different day and time now. If they don't, well then, they are clearly complicit.

The MAGA’s can’t figure out what they’re angry about so everything makes them angry. Trump uses racist words like Chinese flu, or the China virus and republicans are silent. They even remained silent when Trump attacked McConnell’s wife calling her “Coco Chow.” But boy oh boy when Biden calls a dictator a “Dictator” then red Americans wet their pants. Red America apparently has become that crazy aunt living in the attic.

You let your actions do the talking and keep the public rhetoric professional. Reagan understood this with Gorbachev. Clinton understood this as well. Trump imposed tariffs, but would talk about his "friend Xi." My problem with Biden is that he makes it caustically personal with the very men in charge of the situation, which is extremely counterproductive. Xi knew Trump's agenda was going to take China to task, but Trump kept it professional and above board as it related to Xi personally. This accomplishes a few things, but most importantly, it leaves the door open for talks, negotiation. When you begin mocking a guy like Xi or Putin, you've alienated them and good luck getting them to the table. You are resigned to accomplishing anything with merit by force.

Trump imposed tariffs on China which hurt Americans as much if not more than China. For products imported from China after the tariffs were imposed it was American consumers who ended up paying the tariffs rather than the Chinese. China also cut back its importation of American agricultural products in retaliation for the tariffs. To compensate for the loss of Chinese markets the government paid an additional $28 billion in subsidies to US farmers the cost of which was paid by American taxpayers which Trump in a recent speech claimed were paid by the Chinese and his supporters in MAGA world probably believed him.

As I just posted above, there is nothing in these comments from Biden that are "hard on China." He's mocking their leader in a very personal way. It accomplishes nothing but very hard feelings when it becomes a personal mocking situation. Do your research on Clinton and Reagan. They both well understood the need to not alienate your adversaries on the world stage. That doesn't mean Reagan didn't call out the Soviet Union. He did quite a bit and quite forcefully at times. But he was also able to visit Moscow, take a stroll with Gorbachev down Red Square and laugh and joke with him. Gorbachev, while pushing certain reforms, was not a saint. I could run through numerous examples, but he oversaw several crackdowns and hid the Chernobyl nuclear disaster from the Soviet people for 18 days, which led to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians and Belarussians being exposed to dangerous radiation for an extended period of time. Reagan understood Gorbs was not a saint, but he appealed to Gorby's better qualities at a personal level.

You see ? Our political parties offer no prescription for peace. The Democrats have no off-ramp for war against Russia, whereas the Republicans are spoiling for war against China …

Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised eyebrows Monday, telling reporters the US “does not support Taiwan independence” after meeting in Beijing with officials including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Blinken’s statement ruffled the feathers of many Republicans in Congress, who viewed the statement – and the secretary’s inability to re-establish military-to-military communications – as an inappropriate kowtow to America’s greatest adversary.
