This isn't even about ones position on the matter. I am speaking about math. We are discussing population growth and 10% of the population never being born can't even be discussed?

Well old thinking is that a growing population is needed for economic growth. With the advances in ai and robotics this may no longer be the case. I think that even if growth stagnates a little fewer people is probably a win for the planet and the population. Until we become multi planetary if earth dies we die.

I never said you can’t discuss it.

It seems to me saying that abortion and birth control has contributed to the population slow down is obvious. In fact those are likely the primary causes. I think there is something like 40’million abortions worldwide each year. That would be another billion people over 25 years, although clearly some would die. I’ve often asked pro lifers what their take on this is. If one is anti abortion because they think Jesus doesn’t like it and wants the government to stop it - does Jesus care more about American aborted fetuses than around the world? So what would be the consequences of another billion people on our already crowded planet?

Thank you for the response. Not sure it aligns with my thinking, but food for thought.

I can’t imagine why people wouldn’t want to have kids.
-The world is ending because of global warming
-The world is ending because of global pandemic
-The world is ending because Trump was president
-The world is ending because Biden is president
-The world is ending because girls want to become boys
-The world is ending because some people won’t let girls become boys

I honestly am not sure I agree with it either. The fear of this late stage demographic transition is that the rich countries would stop reproducing and the poor would keep having children in some kind of Malthusian nightmare, but the poorer countries have also slowed reproduction. We would eventually be flooded out by poor uneducated non white people. I think this is going to work. If the reactionary luddites like the trumpists and the Russians don’t pull us back into a Stone Age I think we are close to a golden age. Now privacy may be a thing of the past but I am not sure that is a bad thing. I am thinking Huxley’s warning for the future is likely to be our true risk. That is if Atwood’s distopia can be avoided and tilly I say this with as much respect as I can muster. Your antiabortion position is dangerous. A demagogue can use that position to twist away all of our freedoms and future.

No worries, as long as there are straight people, we’ll have people.

Missed your post the first time. My family is on the same trajectory as yours. They’re all Catholic and strictly opposed to abortion and yet there’s been a clear decline in the number of offspring in each generation.

To be clear by starting the thread I wasn’t talking a position that stagnating population is bad. While it will definitely come with growth and financial challenges I think from a scarcity and limited resources perspective it is good, and technology will help to mitigate some of the problems.

This is far from basic math. Let’s say it has been determined that a fetus will be born with cerebral palsy and will need to be taken care of by the parents for the rest of the person’s life at great cost and time to the parents. That might cause the parents to decide not to have any more kids. Whether or not this affects the parents’ choice as to future kids might be determinable through extensive research, but it sure as hell isn’t determinable by basic math.

It is an interesting point. While I think it is pretty safe to say no abortion would increase population, it is likely that some women after having an unwanted child may not have a future wanted child that they had. So while we would have some people alive today that aren’t with no abortion, there are other people alive today that wouldn’t be alive if there were no abortion.

I dont follow. 40M abortions in the US and millions upon millions more worldwide and you think the very small % of health related abortions are what I am referring to?

Probably 10% of the US and maybe even the worlds potential population has been aborted. To say that basic math hasn't contributed to the raw number is frankly politics.

Geesh!! I gave you one example. Let’s say a girl/woman is forced to have a baby at a time when she’s not ready to have a baby. Chances are that child will replace a child that the girl/ woman would have had at a future time. And to make it worse, the outcomes for that unwanted child and the mother are going to be far worse than the outcomes for a wanted child and the mother. The pregnant girl/woman doesn’t need you and the jackasses you vote for to dictate to her what she can do with respect to her body whether it’s a sick future child, a pregnant schoolgirl, a poverty stricken woman, etc.

Yes of course abortions have decreased the population. Whether that is 10% or 5% net, after higher child mortality and offsetting intentional births, the population will be higher. That is obvious.

The more interesting question is that a good thing or bad thing, and what the impacts of such a policy would be

Lol. Calm down. I am not talking about sides or politics. I am saying we have chosen not to give birth to 10% of the population. Anyone being even reasonably objective can admit that has impacted raw numbers. No amount of examples will change that. The sheer number is much to big. Even an objective supporter of choice can still recognize the raw numbers.

That is all I am saying. Side discussions exist of course.
