He was the only living fiction writer I still read. I have been flirting with reading his new books. But they could be a little dreary for this point in my life.
Sad. I had just started paying attention to him like a few weeks ago when he was mentioned on this board.
The Border Trilogy is amazing and Blood Meridian is his magnum opus but damn, Child of God scared the crap out of me. Sutree made me chuckle and Outer Dark was immensely sad.
I'm jealous. You have a lot of goodness in front of you. I'd suggest starting with the Border Trilogy
No Country For Old Men movie is a good intro to the book averse. Landing was a little rough but the spirit of the movie was on point. Blood Meridian is The One for me. Started it again just last week.
I read BM every 6 years or so. Seems it takes that long to recover. lol. Not very "accessible" to the those unfamiliar with McCarthy, IMO.
Other than the previously mentioned Border Trilogy. I enjoyed The Road, No Country For Old Men, Outer Dark, and Child of God. The last two are some seriously twisted shit and it will make you wonder how he thinks up these ideas. I have never seen ideas so dark illustrated by a writer so talented. They are all fairly quick reads too, as far as I remember.
Blood Meridian went right over my head. Might as well have been written in Chinese. Are they all like that? If I were to give him another crack, which one should I read?
No country or the Road are easier to digest, but a different era of Cormac altogether, IMO. They'd be like diving into a band's latest albums then diving into their old stuff after you get a feel for the band but want to see the raw talent of the early years.
