I must say though - pretty cool seeing Coach Bertman in the stands. Big fan. I even bought his book "Coaching and Playing Youth League Baseball".

 

Vitello. He is that unlikeable.

But he is toning the antics down recently and the team responded well today.

Given Kentucky’s non-existenr baseball history, any coach that manages a Super Regional every 5-8 years has job security there.

 

Agreed TJ—I had never really paid much attention to Migione before but after watching him this year I would have to say if the game created that much misery for me that I would have to find a different place other than the dugout to hang out…..

Well this is hilarious. If you think Mingione’s antics are funny Bill, check out what their athletic department does. They have a mural with the words “The road to Omaha” and a picture of their baseball team celebrating. TD Ameritrade Park is in the background. Only problem…….no Kentucky team has ever been to Omaha.

 

I don't know what power numbers Oral Roberts has in their lineup, but their batting averages were all close to, or above .300. Good lineup. Here's to hoping our guys light up the boards these next few games. Get some rips in now, earlier season struggles are all forgotten..... LOL

That Stanford pitcher after last night threw 336 pitches in 10 days over 3 games. Must be a west coast thing, Oregon State would always wear their guys out and Oregon had a kid blow out his arm yesterday pitching twice in that series.

 

Wonder if the PAC12 is putting pressure on their teams to get to/win in Omaha. The SEC is on a recent tear.

 

Take away water polo, men's gymnastics, and a few others and the pac would lose lots of national titles!!

 

The Louisville Cardinals have the same thing painted on the OUTSIDE of their stadium. I wonder if it's a Kentucky one-upsmanship thing.

Interesting data here. As noted above, even University of Louisville's "The Road to Omaha comes thru here" is belied by the data. They are down at the number 35 spot with a .286 winning percentage earned over 5 trips, all since 2007, so pretty current. Is a CWS trip every 4 years enough to justify their braggadocios claim? Pretty lame. Vandy only has 5 CWS trips but 2 titles in the modern era. USC has a great winning percentage and ratio of NCs to trips is better than 2:1, which is impressive, but their days as a nation powerhouse in the 40s seems to carry a lot of that water. LSU wins it every 3 trips, which, in baseball gives you a hall-of-fame average.

 

Louisville has been there multiple times. They at least have a justification to put this mural up.

In my opinion it serves one of two purposes:

1. Shows recruits your accomplishments. Again accomplishments. If you’ve never been there you can’t claim this at all. And honestly a one time appearance is historic but can be considered an anomaly. Plenty of schools like Rutgers with a one time appearance and no real threat of going back. Also schools like Wisconsin have previous trips and no longer play baseball.

2. Reminds current players about what the program’s standard is. This would be for teams like USC, Texas, Vandy, South Carolina, etc. Even F$U can make this claim with their 23 appearances. Anyone with multiple trips or regular appearances can put this up and say “guys, this is what is expected around here.” But Kentucky has never been, so how can it be expected? Huge difference between a goal and an expectation. And if you wanna show off to recruits that this is the program’s “expectation” you’re gonna get a lot of puzzled looks when you have exactly zero previous trips.

Guess they got caught up in the “copy Louisville” mindset and forgot their own history…..or lack of.

I mean unless he gets close to a complete game, then of course you have a loosen the leash a bit.

 

In the 80s in particular all college teams basically let their pitches throw well above 100 pitches in a game for their ace pitchers. Texas was very very bad in doing that to their pitchers.

While I prescribe to the idea of throwing more is supposed to reduce the possibilities of getting significant arm injuries, I think throwing above the 100 pitch mark is generally a bad idea at the college level. Unless there are very unique circumstances involving letting the pitcher go above the 100 pitch mark. And I say unique in terms of it being at the end of the season scenario, you are in warm/humid weather and the pitcher happens to be a very good groove so to speak in throwing low pitch counts from inning to inning. A situation like what happened to Hurston on Saturday. But you will note the minute a runner got on base in the 9th inning by that swinging bunt then Sully immediately took him out of the game given we had a complete bullpen of pitchers ready to go to take it the rest of the way.

When I see teams letting their pitchers go above the 130 pitch level I don't what to say that particular coaching staff except it is telling me you don't have a bullpen you trust at all. To me if you are constantly doing that to your top arms at the college level you are significantly putting risk on that pitcher going beyond the college level particularly if that pitcher does have a change to pitch beyond college.

Roger Clemens got away with pitching a ton of innings in college but I can think of several Texas pitchers in the 80s that seem to get dead arms once they got beyond college and had a very short MLB careers.

I can get letting the pitcher go above the 100 pitch mark but it better be very unique circumstances and you should not do that concept often in my opinion. Throwing a baseball is completely different than throwing a softball thus the reason why college softball pitchers can get away with going well beyond that 100 pitch limit stuff although again I would hesitant to not do that on a consistent basis either for softball pitchers.

 

Just a friendly reminder to everyone--LSU has been to the finals 7 times in Omaha. They have only lost once. That was 2017 and how sweet those nights were!
