saw that on google. It seems like a disaster all around. She seems pretty unstable, but others including federline and maybe even kids appear to be grifting on her, and perhaps the author of that article. Hard to know what to believe.

yeah that poster has blocked me. The blocking function really leads to some dysfunctional dynamics with people having duplicate conversations because they can’t see each other.

Freedom doesn’t meant absent of consequences of poor choices. Super sad for all involved, especially when addiction and/or mental illness take root, but as society you cannot protect everyone from themselves.

    This.

As hard as my wife and I tried we couldn’t save our daughter from her bad choices.

My daughter had drug issues since age 15. That’s 30 years of ups and mostly downs. Tore me and my wife to shreads mentally. She was in and out of rehab but never completed one. She got into legal trouble writing fake scrips and filling at drug stores. Became a convicted felon in Georgia. Sadly we had to take our granddaughter away from her. That’s my granddaughters picture in my photo. When my daughter was sober she was such a caring, funny, loving person. Sadly there isn’t a lot anyone can do that violates a persons right to do what they want short of incarceration. My wife and I knew it was a matter of time as we watched drugs destroy her body. Bottom line personal actions have consequences.

This past April 15th, at age 45, my daughter was found face down, unresponsive on the living room floor in her apartment by a friend that stopped by to see her. We haven’t received the coroners report yet. Preliminary report is drug overdose.

I hope Brittany and every other person struggling with addiction finds help. It doesn’t only hurt the person, it hurts everyone who cares for them, especially family.

Man that’s rough. So sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing. It is a possibility we are starting to mentally prepare ourselves for. If not accidental drug overdose, could also be an intentional prescription drug overdose - our daughter intentionally overdosed on prescriptions 2 weeks ago after her third stent in rehab. She stayed in the mental hospital all of a week and they met her out. Is she is at a sober living, probably about her 5th one of those. She’s only 22.

It just seems like as a society there could be more options to deal with such individuals.

    My heart hurts for you.

There is no more frustration than knowing your child has or may have serious issues and you can’t help. It eats you alive. Just remember, IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT”. I tell my wife that over and over. Don’t let guilt make it harder.

I’ll pray for your daughters well being.

I can’t imagine having to deal with what you did all the way to her being 45 years old. It is so disheartening.

In our daughters case she has a history of mental illness, so it is hard to grapple with how much is a “bad choice” and how much is due to mental illness. Unfortunately in the end it doesn’t matter because the result is the same, and we really have no way of dealing with the chronically mentally ill.

Did you ever do Al Anon and did it help?

No, but my wife attended a few NA meetings with my daughter. My daughter stopped going to them a few years ago.

I meant Al Anon as the family support group, not AA. My daughter does AA and CMA. They seem to help, at least until they don’t.

Sounds familiar to my sibling. He’s been clean 10 years and doing great day by day. God’s grace.

My no was for the Al Anon question. My wife attended some NA (narcotics anonymous) meetings with my daughter. She lived in Georgia while we live in Florida.

    Wow, that all really sucks.
The one positive is that's a great picture of your grand daughter. Wishing all the best for her.

The 'bias' against guardianship is statewide, and it's called freedom.

The law mandates the lease restrictive (involuntary) guardianship possible, and only when warranted, which only happens after the alleged incapacitated is screened by a committee of 3 experts who render professional opinions as to which rights may and ought to be removed, remainder by default, to be preserved, and a judge crafting a least restrictive guardianship thereupon.

...and still, abuse of guardianships happen, and way more that we'd like to believe.

But that's part and parcel to the principle of freedom.

Look at all the rights alleged criminals have, before their freedoms are removed.

How much more so ought the law seek to preserve the rights of ppl who have not and/or do not, commit crimes (or rather, if we're to be technical about it, aren't alleged to have committed a crime?)

TBL is that the more we loosen that threshold, the more freedom is left vulnerable to government usurpation of it, never mind the opening up to abuse.

    jmho/fwiw.

In terms of your son, if he has testamentary capacity (I know you said "he can't take care of himself", but that's not mutually exclusive at all), perhaps he'd be open to a voluntary guardianship--though fully revocable by him, it might still be useful if you're able to garner his cooperation. The voluntary aspect fully dispenses with the MH file--the part where a committee is appointed, and he's examined...just a thought.

Dang...your daughter too? One of my bread n butter business clients for years back in the day, had 2 kids go through similar ordeals. I represented both of them in criminal cases (along with another cousin) that resulted from their drug abuse. One of his kids fully rebounded, as did the cousin. the other, his daughter, seems to be finally turning a corner--while serving a multi-year prison sentence (I didn't represent her for that case--probably for the better, as I'm confident I could have procured a significantly lighter sentence for her--when what she seems to have needed, was a long, stiff one).

I saw what my client went through. so much frustration, so much hurt....

All I can offer is my prayers.
