They have no doubt already given him many opportunities. I would expect they offer him a deal. I’m not sure Trump will fess up or be truthful. Remember, this nut lied to his own lawyers to further this crime. His lawyers would have found and returned the documents. Trump lied to THEM. His own lawyers. Why?
People acting like Trump has already been presented with the option of return documents or face indictment... seem to be overlooking the fact that the dynamic in negotiations change when you have a pretty damning indictment breathing down your neck. If this is really about the DOJ just wanting the documents in their proper place and not putting Trump behind bars, they shouldn't be opposed to that way out... even now.

I would add one more condition, that he refrains from any involvement in politics including a promise not to run for elective office, not to endorse other candidates running for office, not to solicit funds on behalf of either himself or other candidates including political action committees, and last but not least speaking on the behalf any candidates for office or using social media to support candidates for office. I don't think I would prohibit him from soliciting contributions for a defense fund provided that the fund is administered by a neutral third party not selected by the Donald.

The chances are that if he weren't a former president and especially one who is currently an announced candidate for the presidency he probably would have already been prosecuted, convicted and would be currently residing in a federal facility at taxpayer's expense.
But didn’t they try to get them first? Several times? And Trump still hid the documents and lied about their return? These are the points that push this indictment above the political, at least to me.

Where did you come up with this argument? And, the indictment seeks convictions for convict above and beyond the maintenance of records, including obstruction.
