I think you misunderstood, she was great in Ozark and nailed the redneck ... or is it hillbilly ... vibe. I was talking about her roll in "Inventing Anna" where she played the German/Russian con arrist Anna Sorokin ... but as I noted later, it turns she did a pretty good job of impersonating Anna, who really did talk like that. I withdraw my complaint, it's actually the real Anna Sorokin that has an annoying weird accent.

How are we talking about awful accents and not bringing up KevCos in Robin Hood. He had an English accent in parts of the movie and then it vanished in other parts. Brutal.

I don’t recall him ever using an English accent in that movie. In fact, I seem to remember reading that his English accent was so bad they told him not to bother and just had him use his regular voice.

Looks like Ariel may get a break. Miles Morales is arriving to take the heat. Funny thing is, he blames Disney without understanding the particular IP rights with Sony and SpiderMan. So white in his ignorance

Another reason The Death of Stalin was so great. They didn’t even try accents

Just watched the Little Mermaid because its now on Disney+ for free. People upset about this movie are the snowflakiest snowflakes that ever fell from the sky as snowflakes.

Very good post. Just listened to an interview with the author of this book. The Chinese market is just so valuable that they can exert so much influence. It's literally the make or break difference for big budget movies.

The author also covered how coercive the Chinese government is and what movies they allow in. Not only do you have to be sensitive about how anything Chinese is depicted, movies are excluded if they have themes where someone younger outsmarts someone older, and that they are afraid it will give the younger generation bad ideas about overthrowing the government.

The Chinese are also very similar to the way the DeSantis Florida government views content. Apparently John Boyega's image on the Star Wars posters was much smaller in China due to the perception of how audiences would react to actors of color having significant roles. Also, even discussions that someone had a gay partner were subject to having the volume dropped out of the movie at that point when shown in china, or scenes cut out all together. Not sexual scenes, just ones that suggested that homosexuality exists. Very much like DeSantis in that regard.

Apparently, the Chinese threatened Disney studios with never being able to open up Shanghai Disney world after Kundun, even though Disney only released it to four theaters and tried to bury it to avoid offending the Chinese.

What was also interesting was how much the Chinese film industry learn from Hollywood and is now producing their own content which Chinese audiences apparently prefer, meaning there's even less market for Hollywood movies, although it's still such a gigantic market, and is especially indispensable to making the numbers work for a big budget film.

Just saw a cruise ship production (while following Gator BB on phone - obligations).

Both Ariel and Eric were black. To the extent I can enjoy such things, seemed like the same story. Kids seemed to enjoy it just they would a "real" mermaid, whatever that is.
